Ten Ways to Nurture a Creative Life

  1. Allocate space – carve out a favorite corner of the world, gather your tools, and collect your favorites. Let the space fully reflect you and the things you love so that when you step in you are reminded of who you are today and the promise of who you will be tomorrow.

  2. Schedule time – Life gets busy so you have to be intentional about directing your gifts and talents. Creativity isn’t a hobby or an indulgence, it’s how we share ourselves, merge our dreams with reality and bring beauty into the world. There isn’t anything more important than you expressing your unique self.

  3. Surround yourself with inspiration – Fill your world with books, music, and art; comforting textures and invigorating aromas. Capture the words that make you think, collect the visuals that help you see, and say “yes” to the experiences that breathe vitality into your inner and outer life.

  4. Eliminate distractions – There’s a great deal of noise in the world today. Turn it OFF so you can hear the quiet voice within, the sound of your own soul that whispers explore, build, design, imagine, risk, trust, play.

  5. Seek out cultural experiences -- Take weekly or monthly cultural excursions: watch live music, visit galleries, attend a community theatre, host a cultural pot luck with friends, plant a garden, or try some new tunes and have your own dance party (clothing optional). Art creates art.

  6.  Find your community of co-creators – whether your love is singing, dancing, or writing poetry, your tribe is out there. Meetup and Facebook are great resources for connecting with people who have similar interests. Come join us at An Invitation. Your peeps are waiting for you!

  7. Learn new things – Take a class, follow an interest, pick up a new pursuit. When you step outside of your comfort zone and challenge yourself, you come alive in a whole new way. Be willing to experiment, take chances and invite mistakes. Court the opportunities that introduce you to unchartered places inside of yourself and in the bigger world.

  8. Celebrate your creations – Remember when you were a kid and your mom would post your artwork to the fridge? Honor your work! Frame your art, post your creations on social media, pin your ideas to a bulletin board, or start a portfolio.

  9. Look at the world through your inner child’s eyes – Art is everywhere. As women our natural instincts are to create, to beautify and to connect ourselves and other’s to a deeper purpose and a greater sense of meaning. In the age of technology and this era of division, our creative energies are especially needed.

  10. Elevate artists – Buy arts and crafts, attend performances, and invest in the creators. Artists need appreciators. In a culture that overemphasizes financial wealth, we have to bleed soul and substance into the material world. Today’s narrative is written by us. Create something beautiful!
