WARM HANDS, WARMER HEARTS
Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority and Kappa Sigma Fraternity are teaming up to present "Warmer Hands, Warmer Hearts," a glove drive benefitting the Union Mission in Downtown Memphis. ASIAN STUDENT ASSOCIATION BUBBLE TEA & STEAMED BUNS SALE

The "My Favorite Film" series continues on Friday, November 30 at 7:00 p.m. in Spain Auditorium with Campus Minister Brother Tom Sullivan’s favorite film, Trains, Planes, and Automobiles! Kick back and relax and come learn why it’s Brother Tom’s favorite movie! Popcorn, candy, and drinks will be provided!

LIGHTING OF THE CBU CHANUKAH MENORAH 
Everyone is invited to attend the first-ever lighting of the CBU Chanukah Menorah at Buckman Quad on Sunday, December 2, at 2:30 p.m. Rabbi Jeremy Simons of Hillels of Memphis will say a few words about the meaning and customs of the holiday, and the candles will then be lit. After the lighting, there will be a reception with soft drinks and donuts in the Sabbatini Lounge. There will also be dreidels and instructions on how to play the dreidel game, which has a part in the Chanukah story. Chanukah lasts for eight days, so an additional candle will be lit during each day of the holiday, through Sunday, December 9. Assembly of the Menorah has been a cooperative effort by Russell Gourley of the CBU Physical Plant, as well as Sara Laney, Matthew Etts, Michael Mendez, and Lance Silvis.

Deck the Arches!

• If you include decorations that require power (lights, etc.), your team is responsible for working with CBU Maintenance to ensure proper installation and safety protocols are followed.
• Archways will be judged on Wednesday, December 5. Winners will be announced at the CBU Christmas Celebration (see below) that evening. At least one member from the team must be present.
• Archway decorations must be removed on or before Tuesday, December 10 (or your organization will be fined). Each organization is responsible for returning their archway to its original state following the competition.
• Content must be tasteful, and is subject to removal at the discretion of the Office of Student Life at any time.

Gabby Salinas (Biochemistry '11) was the subject of a report on NBC's Today Show on Thanksgiving Day. The profile covers her recent campaign for a Tennessee state senate seat during the 2018 midterms, her childhood battles with bone cancer and thyroid cancer and how how St. Jude changed her life, including her relationship with Marlo Thomas, actress and St. Jude outreach director.

Johanna Wistokat (Business Administration '22) was named to the USTFCCCA  All-South Region team after leading the Lady Bucs to a 13th-place finish in the NCAA South Regional Cross Country Tournament (see below in Buc Bulletin). Johanna finished 19th of 130 runners, completing the women's 6k course in 22:45. Her honor marks the third consecutive year that a CBU Lady Buc runner has placed on the team, following Hannah Owen in 2016 and 2016; Johanna is the first freshman in CBU history to earn a spot.

The newest book by Anthony Maranise, OblSB (Religion & Philosophy ‘11, Catholic Studies ‘17), entitled Cross of a Different Kind: Cancer & Christian Spirituality [Eternal Insight Press, 2018], was declared category winner for Religion-Christianity at the American Book Festival in Los Angeles, thereby earning a Best Book Award. The honor comes with both the distinction as well as $5,000 in free publicity. As always, 100% of all proceeds from the sales of Anthony’s newest book directly benefit the lifesaving work at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Dr. James McGuffee (Dean, School of Sciences) was a featured speaker at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts' "Science Speaker Series" on November 9. Dr. McGuffee, a 1985 alumnus of LSMSA, spoked on "Big Data and Artificial Intelligence."

Joseph Jones (BSBA-Accounting '88) was recently promoted to the position of executive director of the American Contract Bridge League, the world’s largest bridge organization and the sanctioning body for the game of bridge in North America. A lifelong Memphian, Joe has worked at the ACBL for eight years, where previously served as CFO. He also is a licensed Certified Public Accountant. He and his wife Julie, who is a neonatal ICU nurse, have a son and two daughters.

Rachel Stephens (Physics '20) and Donal Newsome (Physics '20) show off some new equipment for an electron spin resonance experiment that they will perform when they take their Advanced Physics Laboratory (PHYS 452) course next year. Dr. John Varriano (Physics & Natural Science, Chair)) was awarded an equipment grant from the Johnathon F. Reichert Foundation to aid in the purchase of the equipment. The remaining cost of the equipment was covered by funds donated to the School of Sciences general fund by generous donors.

CBU AND UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS TO SPONSOR SCS SPELLING BEE
Christian Brothers University and the University of Memphis will co-sponsor the 2019 Shelby County Schools Spelling Bee, with the winner advancing to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC. The SCS Spelling Bee will take place at the University of Memphis Rose Theatre on Saturday, February 9, 2019. Seventy-four schools are currently registered for the SCS Spelling Bee. Each school's champion will take an online test administered and proctored by Scripps. Scripps will grade the tests and submit the top 50 spellers in Shelby County. The top 50 spellers will participate in the SCS Spelling Bee with the winner advancing to our nation's capital to compete with other champion spellers from around the United States.
     "The Scripps Spelling Bee is a great American tradition, and I am very happy CBU and the U of M could wort out this partnership to return the Regional Bee to Memphis, allowing our students to focus on spelling and not travel." said CBU President John Smarrelli.
     Schools can still enroll in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program by January 30, 2019, and receive all of the materials to conduct classroom and school spelling bees. For more information, go to spellingbee.com.

3. FOOD DRIVE TO BENEFIT THE MID-SOUTH FOOD BANK AND ST. MARY'S SOUP KITCHEN: We're collecting non-perishable items such as canned soups, vegetables, beans, and fruits; and non-frozen microwave meals.

Attention Seniors & Graduate Students!

This is a friendly reminder that a graduation application is required in order for all degrees to be conferred. If you plan to graduate in DECEMBER, and you have not already completed a graduation application, you must do so immediately. Please be advised that the graduation application deadline for December graduates has passed, and those filing after the September 15 deadline will now be assessed a $50 late fee in addition to the $130 standard graduation fee. 
For students anticipating graduation in May or August, the graduation application deadline is December 1. 
The $130 graduation fee is applied at the beginning of the semester in which graduation is anticipated. This application fee is applicable for one year. After this time, students who have not completed their degree requirements will be removed from the graduation list, and they must reapply for graduation, as well as repay the graduation fee. Those filing after the stated deadlines will be assessed a non-refundable late fee of $50.
