12 Days of Giving

For Giving Tuesday 2018, we wanted to get the word out about some of the wonderful things we are able to do through the support of our funders. That is why this year we are doing: 12 Days of Giving. In anticipation of tomorrow, Giving Tuesday, we have been posting online 12 important services, shown below, that we provide and are made possible with your support.

We wanted to be sure we shared them with you!  Thank You

Help our students advance at least one reading level.
The Philadelphia Out of School Time Literacy Initiative identified the work of Sunrise as having a significant impact on our students' reading levels. For our students at Key and Southwark School, by the end of the 2017-2018 school year, over 50% of our Southwark students were reading at or above grade level and every student at Key increased by more than one whole grade reading level.

Provide opportunities for youth to use their voice.
Sunrise Youth at Southwark, Edwin M. Stanton, and Chester A. Arthur Schools interviewed educators and community members for Lights on Afterschool, Thursday, October 25, 2018. Students at those sites interviewed community members and educators.
Support health and wellness programs.
Part of our daily programming at each site includes physical activity, including games, dancing, and yoga. At Sunrise we know a healthy body supports a healthy mind.

Support trauma informed care for our youth.
“I think a great thing we’ve been trying to do in this partnership…is doing the trauma-informed approach,” said Erika Guadalupe Núñez, Manager of Community Programs at Fleisher Art Memorial, about their partnership with Sunrise of Philadelphia through the William Penn Foundation, Our Stories. You can read more about the trauma informed work we do through our arts-integrated literacy programming here.
Make a commitment to family literacy.
Sunrise has a focus on family literacy because we know that if we are helping the youth we serve, and their families become better readers, then we are helping create a strong foundation for our community.
Opportunities for youth in South Philadelphia to become immersed in technology.
Students at Chester A. Arthur Elementary School participate in programming with Coded by Kids. It is our goal to open up students to the opportunities in tech and give them the skills to pursue those opportunities. 80% of students report that they are considering careers in tech after participating in a Coded by Kids program.

Advance musical knowledge for our students.
Through our partnership with Play On, Philly! we are able to provide programming for our youth based on music fundamentals, and this is not all about fun and games. Play On, Philly! has demonstrated that sites participating in their programs have shown ‘quantifiable success’ with higher grades on standardized tests, higher math and language test scores, increased studying skills, and demonstrated determination and focus.
Afterschool opportunities keep our youth safe.
Analysis shows that nationally, the late afternoon, between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., is when there are the highest incidents of violence among juveniles. Most youth that are unsupervised after school are considered 'at-risk.' Supporting Sunrise of Philadelphia afterschool programs means you support safe spaces for South Philadelphia youth.

Afterschool helps families work while providing safe afterschool programs.
The Afterschool Alliance study, America After 3 p.m., shows that 85% of parents in Pennsylvania support public funding for afterschool, and that over 70% of parents not only find peace of mind with afterschool programming for their children, but also that these programs help parents keep their jobs.

Jump-starting our middle school students into their futures.
Sunrise is able to jump-start our middle school students into their futures. We do this by encouraging our students to imagine the future they want for themselves and providing the quality programming that will help them along the path to that vision.

Through partnerships with local businesses we are able to connect our youth to consistent, quality work opportunities.
This summer, our high school students obtained on the job training and apprenticeship in upholstery thanks to the Philadelphia Youth Network and a partnership with CFI / Boomerang, "the East Coast's pre-eminent specialist in high quality, pre-owned office furniture." The student participants made their way to Pennsauken, NJ four times a week for their work and learned a lot about the different kinds of jobs needed to make an office run smoothly and look great.

Supporting partnerships.
Sunrise of Philadelphia is part of a fantastic community of providers that supports youth in our beautiful and diverse community of South Philadelphia.

We could not do it alone, our youth grow with your support!

Thank You!
