USA Today's Berkowitz keeps us updated on developments in the Alston case as the plaintiffs submitted their last written statement before December 18th's hearing. Notable: "While Defendants try to dismiss the analogue of Power Five autonomy, the trial established that these conferences were able to promulgate rule changes to provide additional benefits to athletes that many other conferences prohibit without any adverse impact on demand or integration. This is strong evidence that even those conferences with the greatest economic resources can be expected to adopt rules which benefit their athletes while preserving demand, integration, and other values." Former Michigan State Prez Simon has been charged with lying to police in the state’s investigation of MSU’s handling of the Nassar case. Simon, who was charged with two felonies and two misdemeanors, allegedly indicated to investigators that she was aware a physician was the subject of a 2014 Title IX inquiry; however the state’s attorney general’s office contends Simon knew that physician to be Nassar. MSU has placed Simon on a leave of absence without pay. If convicted, Simon faces up to four years in prison. (link)
Lots of eyes opened yesterday as news hit that Amazon has bid on the 22 former Fox RSNs that Disney has to sell (link). However, it's most notable to start with thoughts from BTIG's Greenfield, who reminds us this development doesn't mean Amazon will come in with the highest bid or even if it does that its bid will be the chosen option (like when Google/YouTube was the high bidder for the NFL's Sunday Ticket, only to see it go back to DirecTV). However, Greenfield does think the regional sports play makes more since for Amazon than a national package. Ultimately, Greenfield wonders if New Fox doesn't swoop in at the last minute to regain control of the RSNs with a multiple in the 6x range. (link); Octagon media rights lead Cohen: "NHL, NBA and MLB teams aren’t going to be in love with the idea that their local content could be going to be put behind a Prime subscription." (link); Axios' Primack: "Disney has plenty of competitive reasons to go with a private equity bidder for the regional sports nets, even if Amazon offers the most $$." (link); To Primack's point, there are a number a private equity outfits involved & the operation of the RSNs could be heavily predicated on driving bottom line value if PE firms ends up as the winner. The latest College Football Playoff rankings were a run of the mill affair at the top: Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame, Michigan. UCF's positioning continues to be a story as the Knights are up to 9. "Full body of work" used three times. Committee chair & Oregon AD Mullens: "I want to be clear. We said there was a deep discussion on 3, 4, 5, and the head-to-head at this point still does carry the weight. That's why Notre Dame is 3, Michigan is 4, and Georgia is 5." More. (link - full transcript)
The San Jose Mercury News' Wilner talks to branding experts & consultants on how the Pac-12 has addressed its FB officiating & review controversies this season. G.F. Bunting & Co.'s namesake: "(The Pac-12) has to be hyper-aggressive and hyper-vigilant. What are they doing to ensure this doesn’t happen again? It’s not enough to have the commissioner say, 'It’s all good.' [...] There’s an old saying: sunlight is the best disinfectant. The questions here are so central to integrity, fairness and how the Pac 12 handles official replays. It doesn’t begin and end with football. Who’s going to stop this kind of meddling from happening in other sports?" Media consultant & former Fox Sports leader Crakes: "The question is what does this do to the brand positioning with the hardcores — for the big donors, the ultra-engaged fans who buy tickets, and the administrators on the campuses? That’s different than the brand impact with the general public, and it’s something to consider … Something that impacts faith in the system can damage brand perception with key stakeholders." (link)
"I’m baffled. I thought we were out of this. Now we’re back in the world of the NCAA deciding whose grandma is sicker than whose uncle." That's a "veteran" MBB coach to the Sporting News' DeCourcy on the trend lines of student-athlete transfer immediate eligibility decisions out of Indianapolis. "It's a farce" is another comment. NCAA VP for Academic & Membership Affairs Schnase: "We think the approval rate is probably in the upper 50s now, maybe low 60s. It’s still a strict bar. We don’t approve these just to approve them. There was to be some serious, compelling reason. We don’t approve frivolous waivers. There’s no formulaic approach; no A+B = C. [...] School A asserts that School B did something wrong. We go back to School B and ask them to comment. One of the questions we’re going to ask in the future: 'Should that matter?'" Current season data: 68 waivers submitted, 27 approved, 17 denied, 24 still open. (link)
Latest SBJ: Headliners Smith & Fischer report the NCAA's Board of Governors had significant conversation on the positioning of eSports at its October meeting, including digging into details like how a championship event would look, how a title-winner would be determined & if it should be housed in athletic departments. Officially, the NCAA says it will "continue to evaluate." ESG Law's Blum believes the NCAA could be a major tipping point for eSports, but not under its current framework of governance. Envy Gaming "primary capital backer" Hersh is telling Presidents to go ahead & put eSports in the athletic department, "It may not be there yet, but in two or three years, it’ll be an Olympic sport." (link); Hoops big wig Colangelo continues his quest to put Grand Canyon on the map, "We’re going to finish with 30,000 students on campus, a contained campus, which I love." Recounts a visit by NCAA Prez Emmert back in 2012, "We spent a day in my office. At the end of the day, I said, ‘Let’s take a ride.’ He said, 'Where are we going?' I said, 'I will tell you when we get there.' I brought him here." (link); The Athletic is not pivoting to video, simply adding key talent, like former '60 Minutes' correspondent Keteyian, to accentuate its storytelling abilities. Company CEO Mather points to subscription of over 100K now. (link); All articles are open & don't require a password.
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Iowa State FB will now play Drake on December 1st, not Incarnate Word, who is preparing for their FCS Playoffs debut this weekend. Bulldogs AD Hardin jokes about the tweet he sent earlier in the year inviting the Cyclones & Nebraska to play in Des Moines, then ISU AD Pollard called, "I saw his name pop up in my caller ID and I’m like, 'Oh great — he’s going to get into me about this tweet that I put out there […] But, it wasn’t that at all. It was him saying, 'Hey, I’ve got a real creative idea here for you.'" No word on financial details yet. (link); Michigan State Asst. AD & hoops analytics expert Pauga agrees with Yahoo's Eisenberg that some of the most valuable non-conference wins can come in the consolation bracket side of MTE events. (link); More Pauga: "When evaluating resumes and ranking teams this early in the college basketball season, understand that it's too soon to know if a result is an upset, an outlier, a quality win, etc. or if preseason expectations were simply wrong. Be patient and let it evolve." (link)

Virginia Senior Assoc. AD for Programs/SWA Miller announces she's ready to call it a career this coming spring. Miller has been a mainstay in Charlottesville for the past 35 years & among other duties currently oversees men's golf, volleyball, women's soccer, field hockey, women's basketball, baseball, men's lacrosse and women's lacrosse. Cavs AD Williams: "For me personally, she has been a tremendous resource and a trusted advisor in my first year at UVA. Her administrative experience at UVA as well as within the ACC and NCAA governance structure has been invaluable. We will miss her, but thankfully she will be staying in Charlottesville and is only a phone call away." (link)
NJ.com's Politi argues if Rutgers FB HC Ash doesn't eventually work out, Scarlet Knights AD Hobbs should be held fully accountable. Politi points to multiple instances where he believes Hobbs could have appropriately addressed the situation of keeping Ash for a fourth season, but instead called out national media via Twitter & then offered few thoughtful comments to the RU fan base. Politi ends with some sharp words, "Hobbs needs to explain this decision in the coming days. He hired Ash and, after the program suffered its worst season in more than a decade, decided to ignore all advice and evidence in his decision to bring him back. If Ash falls flat on his face, so does he." (link)
More Personnel: UMass AD Bamford will look for a new FB HC. Outgoing HC Whipple is due $500K if the termination is done prior to the end of the month, but only $300K if it occurs after Dec. 1. (link); New Mexico FB HC Davie "absolutely" believes he will be back with the Lobos next season. (link); Missouri State AD Moats reiterates his confidence in FB HC Steckel. (link); McNeese State parts ways with FB HC Guidry. (link); Interim FB HC Jones won't get the permanent gig as Morgan State AD Scott announces a national search has begun for the next Bears' leader. (link); Quinnipiac AD Amodio on the hunt for a new Volleyball HC. (link)
The Las Vegas Review Journal continues its five-part series on the state of UNLV athletics, asks if eliminating FB could be a strategy. Rebels boss Reed-Francois quick to say there's no such plan for the university, points to brand resurgence stories at Virginia Tech, Cincinnati, TCU & Kansas State, "What I know is it can be done here. We’ve studied this. There’s never going to be one that’s exactly the same scenario, but they provide illustrations and help us to formulate our plan." Leaders at Cal State Fullerton & Long Beach State recount stories of axing FB, how their current budget & sport sponsorship success would be impacted by adding FB again. (link)
Houston's revamped Fertitta Center will be ready for its reopening & a December 1 MBB tip with Oregon. SBD's Sunnucks reviews the building's changes, capacity from 8,479 to 7,100, 712 of which are premium, 30 permanent points of sale for Aramark, plus another eight to 12 mobile units. Cougars AD Pezman: "It's a totally different facility." Picture of the new digs included. (link)
Dallas SportsDay's Straka wonders why high-scoring Big 12 FB games get a bad rap, but Monday night's NFL instant classic between the Rams & Chiefs, that ended 54-51, is pointed to as a thing of beauty. TCU boss Patterson: "What I think is that everybody is saying that was such a great game, but that our's is a negative. […] How many Big 12 teams have, in a season, won where they only scored 17, 16 and 14 and lost one 17-14? But 'nobody plays a good defense.' We've played won three ballgames where we haven't scored 20 points." (link)
It is indeed a good time to be a Northwestern Wildcat. NU AD Phillips: "We’ve raised over $440 million in the last four years. The school itself is in the process of raising $4 billion, which will likely go to $5 billion. We have a new $270 million lakefront sports facility, a $120 million refurbishing of the basketball arena, new venues for soccer, lacrosse, tennis, on and on. This is a moment in time that Northwestern can be proud of." Phillips talks through his thoughts on how to get students to the Big Ten FB Championship game, "I thought maybe we’d get a thousand students. But over 3,500 are going. We have 58 buses from a dozen companies. I don’t think there’s a bus left in Chicago. […] That’s 45 percent of the student body going,. Ohio State has 40,000 students [actually 46,000]. Think if they got that percentage?" (link)
Oregon State AD Barnes with a long Q&A with the Portland Tribune after 20 months of leadership in Corvallis, says the Beavers' vision has been "crystalized," its culture "strong." Barnes: "We have a lot of talent on staff. My philosophy is, if you have 10 people in the room, let's use the talent. […] Now we’re executing." Points to a break-even budget in 2020, though accrued debt will sit around $40M. Financial sustainability plan includes 1) Refinancing said debt, which will save $2.5M a year; 2) Create a contingency fund; and, 3) Once the budget has been balanced, 90% of every dollar will be reinvested with the remaining cash used to pay off the debt. Notes a possible $100M to $200M renovation to Reser Stadium to upgrade the fan experience given the importance of generating revenue from FB. Also says of the Pac-12's media situation, "The game-changer is the next contract. We have to hold tight and make the most of what we have and be in position for the next go-around." More. (link)
UC Davis Chancellor May on Aggie Athletics' commitment to launching student-athletes into careers after their playing days are over via its "EVO" framework, "EVO is designed to get them prepared after athletics ends. Most of their lives, their identity has been ‘athlete’ or student-athlete, right? It can be a rude awakening when all of that is over. So we want that not to be a shock for UC Davis student-athletes. We want them to be well-prepared for professional careers. [...] We think that some of the concepts that Athletics is developing in the EVO program are applicable to the general student body as well. We’d like to see that expand to the scale … with the resources have." (link)

Deals: The Pac-12 extends with Amazon Web Services. Of note, "As a key part of its all-in migration, Pac-12 will move business-critical databases to Amazon Aurora to gain the speed and availability of a commercial database with the simplicity and cost effectiveness of open source." (link); The Big East & Dyehard Fan Supply join hands in an "official merchandising partnership." (link); Canisius & Aspire will continue working together in a multi-year agreement. (link)
Also Noticed: Adidas' response to former Louisville/South Carolina MBB student-athlete's lawsuit against the three stripes: "We have reviewed these allegations and believe they have no merit." (link); Oklahoma State with a clever way of announcing it's future FB home-and-home with Oregon. The Cowboys will visit Eugene in 2025 with a return trip for the Ducks the following year. (link); The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will once again partner with the Sunshine Showdown Series between Florida and Florida State.
