Who do you think would make a good Poet Laureate?
Carol Ann Duffy completes her 10-year term as Poet Laureate at the end of April 2019. The DCMS (Department for Culture, Media & Sport) is considering her successor and Ledbury Poetry Festival is involved in the consultation. If you would like to suggest a poet you think would make a good Poet Laureate, or if you would like to contribute your views to the process, please do email me on director@poetry-festival.co.uk.
Please note, all responses will remain anonymous and confidential and this isn’t a vote. Ledbury Poetry Festival will compile the comments received and share the information with the DCMS steering committee. The committee’s recommendations are submitted to the Prime Minister and HM The Queen ready for a new appointment on 1 May 2019. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Ledbury Poetry Salon on Tuesday 27 November with Jean Boase-Beier on Memorial to the Future by Volker von Törne, a German poet she translated for Arc's Visible Poets series. Von Törne's father had been a member of the SS in Germany in the Second World War, and as a consequence, his poetry is written from the perspective of someone who suffered, through no fault of his own, from terrible guilt after the war. "The poetry is clearly haunted by both the definable and indefinable legacies of the past. And Von Törne is clearly in a particularly strong position to explore that haunting. He does that with a variety of styles and approaches, and the final result is both illuminating of a particular attitude in German literature, and also deeply affecting." (Ian Pople, The Manchester Review) Jean is Professor Emerita of Literature and Translation at the University of East Anglia, where she founded the MA in Literary Translation. She will read some of the poems in context and then she will also use a particular poem to explore the translation issues.
