The Heinlein Society
Happy Thanksgiving! Here's what The Heinlein Society has been up to in October and November.

The Season of Giving is Here!

While many of us look forward to the day that we face the end of the year with too much cash, we all know that There Ain’t No Such Thing As A Free Lunch. We trust that you enjoy The Heinlein Society as much as we enjoy your membership, and hope you will consider an end of year donation to THS. We’re a 501(c)(3) organization, and 100% of your dues and donations go to our program operations. Unlike many charitable outfits, we use none of your funding for administrative support – no one on the Society’s Board of Directors or our various committees receives a salary. No personal travel expenses are compensated unless they are ruled to have been of extraordinary service to the Society.

You can designate your donation specifically to a program that is significant to you like Heinlein Blood Drives, Education, The Heinlein Award (in partnership with the Baltimore Science Fiction Society), our three annual Scholarships, or Heinlein for Heroes. Undesignated donations enter our general operating fund to be used at the discretion of the Board. All donations are tax deductible.

As we approach the end of the year, please consider The Heinlein Society in your giving plans.

VIRGINIA EDITION RAFFLE!

The Heinlein Society is pleased to announce the winner of this year's Virginia Edition raffle,Jonathan Darer. Jon joined the Society at the San Jose WorldCon and is already reaping a huge reward!

If you didn't win the VE this past year, the board of the Society has already voted to run it again for the membership next year, so keep your membership active!
Heinlein in the News!

Society friend Alec Nevala-Lee’s new tome, Astounding: John W. Campbell, Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, L. Ron Hubbard, and the Golden Age of Science Fiction, was published in October (both hardcopy and electronic),  and is generating favorable reviews from such worthies as Greg Bear, Barry Malzberg, and Robert Silverberg.  Alec was also kind enough to gift the Society with an autographed hardback which we will be looking to raffle off, possibly as part of next year’s Annual Meeting. If you’re a fan of the history of the genre, no doubt you’ve felt the lack of an extended look at Campbell, and here you get Heinlein, Asimov, and Hubbard too!

BLOOD DRIVE UPDATE

by Carlin Black, Blood Drive Chair

LifeSouth is branching out from DragonCon and adding WasabiCon and CollectiveCon, both in Jacksonville, FL.
We can always use people who want to Pay It Forward by coordinating a blood drive at their favorite con(s) or helping out at existing Heinlein Blood Drives.  Blood Drive Worker Bees do not have to be blood donors or attend the con, although a walk around pass is usually part of the deal. Contact BloodDriveChair@heinleinsociety.org with your location and favorite cons and we will try to match you up.

Help us share the Pay It Forward mission!
Watch The Heinlein Society Blood Drive Page on Facebook for more details!

This fiscal year, we’ve made 323 shipments, totaling 3,533 books distributed. Since the program’s inception, we’ve sent 19,816 total books to our heroes.

The Heinlein For Heroes program (H4H) sends free books to troops, veterans, and military families. We send only to individuals or units that have requested SF material.  Clearly many of our military men and women WANT to read good science fiction, including Heinlein. To meet that demand, our shipments go around the globe, as well as to veterans’ hospitals here at home.

Contributions keep coming in, but your help is still needed. We need gently used paperbacks—and especially Heinleins, as we include Heinlein books in every shipment.

Money contributions are used to buy books wherever we find them (book dealers, eBay) at the right price.  But free is even better than cheap. Is an SF friend or neighbor downsizing? You can help them and help us!

Go to heinleinsociety.org/h4h/ for information on where to send books or money.

Many, many thanks to Mr. Shahid Mahmud of ARC Manor for the generous donation of 27 large trade edition paperbacks! Thanks also to Ms. Toni Weisskopf of Baen Books for her HUGE donation of Heinlein books.

Here’s what some of our recent care package recipients had to say:

Operation Paperback,
The Direwolf team wanted to say thanks and that we appreciate everything
you all are doing to ensure we have quality reading material. We are doing
well and appreciate all the support. We are making sure the soldiers are
aware of what you are doing for us as well as getting your info out to other
units. Hope all is well, we will keep in touch.
Sincerely,
Jeremy M. LaBranche

Hello,

Just a quick note to express the Pandarchy Platoon’s gratitude for the books we received. Our kindest regards. I have attached a picture of (most) of us with our castle in the background. Again, thank you so much for your support.

Cheers,

2019 WORLDCON PLANNING
by Keith Kato
Who’s ready to plan for next year! For those already thinking about the next Worldcon, here are some things to consider:
  • Lodging will be snapped up quickly, and may be more expensive than in Helsinki last year. Keep an eye on the website https://dublin2019.com/location/hotels-accommodation/; hotel rates will be released on January 9, 2019.
  • If you’d like to get a jump start on planning your lodging, I’m considering renting a seven bedroom, 12 beds of various sizes, three bathrooms, three story home, with a very large kitchen. While not within walking distance to the Convention Centre, it offers a 5 minute walk to a Tram station, where the tram will drop you off at the Convention Centre itself. Dividing the total cost by rooms (instead of beds), this looks to be about US$130 per night. This is NOT an official THS-planned offer, but a house of Heinleiners may (or may not) be a good place to start. If you’re interested, please reach out to Keith Kato.
  • Also not an official THS planned offer (but should still be really fun!): A theater party on Wednesday, 14 August 2019, at 7:30 PM at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin, to see the famous Irish dance show “Riverdance.” This is the evening before Worldcon begins. “Riverdance” is observing its 25th Anniversary in 2019, and the show itself will be running during the Worldcon. If you’re interested, TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW with wide open seat locations and even “early bird” prices. Individuals will take care of their own tickets, and the group would likely gather for dinner, see the show, and maybe hit a pub afterwards.
Again, neither the housing nor theater party are THS projects. However, interested parties can email membership@heinleinsociety.org and they will forward messages to me to coordinate.
All permanent membership cards for those who became members on or before September 15th, 2017 have been shipped! Please contact Ken Walters at membershiprenewal@heinleinsociety.org if you have not received yours.
