'Flowers Gather Hearts' by Anna Ray
 
Since March I have been working with women in Ashford, Kent, on a special commission for People United and The Diocese of Canterbury. The group comprises of long term residents and newly arrived Syrian refugees. A crèche was set up within the workshops, so the women's children have been able join in the making and play alongside us. Together we have been making artwork considering notions of 'Home'. Please find here your invitation (English) (Arabic) to the upcoming exhibition in Ashford and the press release.

For the commission I have created a series of thirty-three repeat prints on silk, linen and cotton, from the participants collaborative and individual artwork. With these diverse fabrics I have made a new series and also an edition of sixty swatch cards. The cards will be given to the participants, partners and volunteers at the opening of the exhibition. The fabrics have been selected to reflect each person's unique contribution to the project.

As part of the final commission I have produced a film of a performance, which shows the participants layering their artwork over a table. The performance begins with a traditional Syrian Aghabani tablecloth being laid over a hand embroidered tablecloth made by my grandmother. This performance will be repeated at the opening event.
