Service Projects
As we approach the festive season, our attention turns to supporting members of our local community. This year we are asking students to support the following groups:

  • Year 7 and 8 students will be making Christmas boxes to give to the children of patients at the Hawke’s Bay Hospital. We are asking students to buy items to the value of approximately $20 to fill a Christmas box. They will be making decorations and cards for this as part of the End of Year Projects.
  • Year 9 students are making edible gifts for the residents of Waiapu House. In order to cover the costs of this project each student will be charged $20.
  • Year 10 students are asked to purchase a gift to the value of approximately $20 for a young person between the ages of 11-16, which will be distributed to families supported by Women’s Refuge. These items should be brought into school unwrapped.
  • Year 11-13 students are asked to bring into school at least one non-perishable food item which will be donated to the Hawke’s Bay Food Bank.
  • Full boarders in Years 7, 8 and 10 will have the opportunity to purchase their gifts as part of this weekend’s boarding activities.

Pretty Smart Presentation
Last Friday afternoon, Years 9 and 10 from Woodford House and Iona College combined to hear a thought-provoking Pretty Smart presentation delivered by Angela Barnett, writer, marketer and founder of body positivity website Fabik.

Barnett discussed the common place media images designed to bombard their confidence and offered ways to recognise media manipulation and how to successfully and confidently navigate the world around them, and on their social feeds.  At the end of the talk, Barnett gave the audience “homework’ – to write down three things they like about their own bodies, so whenever anyone has a negative they can go back to aspects of themselves that make them feel individual and unique.

Angela Barnett welcomed questions from the girls and is happy to be contacted directly around these issues. Woodford House Deans accompanied the girls to the presentation so the pastoral team is able to respond to any queries you or your daughter may have. Check out the Pretty Smart website here.

Pretty Smart has prepared an easy, three-page handout for you to go through with your daughter to reinforce some of the messages heard, especially in relation to being kind to each other about appearance. You will find the hand out here.

Olive Oil Fundraising for the 2019 Europe Trip
As part of our fundraising for next year’s Europe trip we have bottles of limited edition boutique olive oil for sale at $25 per bottle. This was pressed from the olives which our students and their families picked at the Dowley Family residence earlier in the year. It is delicious and would make an ideal Christmas gift. If you would like to purchase a bottle or two please complete the following link: https://permission.click/aGJaJ/nz

Clearance
A reminder to all students that items such as text books, sports uniform, locker keys, library books, school devices, musical instruments and any other items of school equipment need to be returned by the end of the year.

Final clearance for Juniors will take place on Wednesday 28 November. Year 11 and 12 will take place on Monday 3 December and Year 13 on Tuesday 4 December. We would like all items returned before these dates. Please note outstanding items will be charged to accounts.

Missing Tablet
The Art Department is missing a Wacom Intuos tablet and pen from the design room. A Wacom tablet uses a pen rather than a mouse to draw on screen with Adobe Photoshop. If anyone has seen it the Art Department would be very grateful if you could let them know as it will be greatly missed by next year’s designers. Size is 20cm x 16cm.

Holiday Reading
When it comes to summer, reading may not be the first thing students have in mind! But reading can be the ideal summer activity and will help to stop the well-known ‘summer slide’. Books can be selected during the last two days of school. Otherwise e-books and audiobooks are fun, portable, can involve the whole family, and will help students academically.

Our ePlatform helps make this easy – students don’t have to try and get a bag full of books home, simply download the app, browse a huge range of e-books and audiobooks, borrow and return all from their device! What’s more, they are great in the car on a long trip and the settings can be personalised.

Hereworth Christmas Market
The Hereworth Christmas Market is taking place today Thursday 22 November from 5pm – 7:30pm in the Hereworth School Quad. Click here to see the flyer.

Ministry of Education Survey
The Ministry of Education is working on a strategy for schooling provision in Havelock North and surrounding area. With new housing areas planned, they have the opportunity to take a longer term view to find out what the community wants for schools in their area and how the Ministry of Education might provide for any growth in the future.

Before the Ministry of Education develop the strategy, they want to hear what you have to say about schools in the community and what you believe the future education needs are. The Ministry of Education welcome everyone to complete the survey below – whānau, students, educators, local iwi, and board of trustee members. It should take less than 10 minutes to complete and will help the Reference Group develop options for the community.

The survey is open until 10pm on 3 December and available by clicking here.
