Dear friends,
The word “missions” is a key part of our vocabulary at the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP). Research and innovation can stimulate growth and economic activity, but it can also be actively directed towards tackling global challenges by transforming them into concrete, measurable—and achievable—missions.
Our mission-oriented approach continues to have an international impact: Gregor Semieniuk and I published a key chapter in the Emissions Gap Report for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on the role of innovation policy and market creation; we are part of a new pathbreaking initiative with Mexico where we will bring our missions framework to address the societal challenge of energy transition in the country; and the European Commission’s EU-wide consultation on our missions report showed broad support, with 89% agreeing missions must be bold, cross-sectoral, measurable, ambitious but realistic and bottom-up.
On a final note, I am absolutely thrilled to share with you the news that Brian Eno has joined IIPP’s Advisory Board. Brian has been part of the story of IIPP from the very beginning and he will now help us steer a very exciting future for the institute.
Further information on all of the above, and more IIPP news, can be found below.
With very best wishes,
