Disappointment, a crushing blow that hangs heavy like a big fat, black slug on your lip. A sure fire indicator that things didn't go according to whatever plans you laid and more often than not, an unwelcome side-effect of expectation - but you needn't suffer it. Streamline your plans and pare them to the bone. Limit your expectations of 'what should be' and embrace 'what is'. Free yourself from restraint, embrace the unforeseen and say goodbye to disappointment ...
... I saw someone wearing a T shirt the other day, it posed the question, 'WTF have you done lately?'. Obviously, a rhetorical question but one that many of us will likely be asking ourselves as another year draws to a close. Did you take advantage of those opportunities that presented themselves or did you expend your energies searching for excuses for not doing? Did you pin all on a trip that never came off or did you eke out adventure from the tiniest opportunity? I didn't venture far afield this year, no foreign epics or grand departs, yet I look back and great memories filter into my conscious. Many are the seemingly mundane, everyday happenings of life on the trail but they are snippets of time that'll I'll remember fondly for many years. You probably had to be there to appreciate them - which I believe is kind of the point ...
... luckily, we're just about to be given a brand new opportunity. A fresh start and a chance to reset the clock. The New Year is still a blank page and we can choose to fill it with excuses or endeavour, memories or remorse. It really is our choice but just remember, never be put off by how bad things are or appear to be because while they could always be worse ... chances are, they'll get better.

Happy New Year everyone.
