We're back into the winter swing of things, which always seems a little colder than I remember. The special challenge of vegetable farming these days is keeping the fingers and the toes sensible. Meaning, being able to sense that they are still there! I've found that my personal outdoor comfort temperature for fully functional digits is 40 degrees with no wind, and that can be a challenging order to fill these days. No problem, we are constantly demonstrating that discomfort is not fatal.
We're still at working getting all of our fall carrots harvested, and you might wonder why we didn't just do it sooner so that I'd write about something more fun than being cold. One reason is that we were busy with other projects. The other reason, which will interest your palate, is that if you wait as long as you can, and let those carrots get exposed to a lot of cold weather, they morph into magical unicorn-level sweetness with a ridiculously delicious crunchy tender texture.
So that is why we're doing this thing. It's pretty tough working out there....our most polite crew member, Scott, actually said the non-acronym version of WTF for the first time in his life (maybe just the first time I've heard him) while struggling though the cold mud to wrangle out those magical unicorns. He was smiling, though!
Eat well,
Your cold muddy happy farmers
