SLA Holidays Around the World
Celebrating a World of Traditions
with International Flair & Flavor
At participating schools, globally influenced entrees will be offered for lunch in December. The three variations are Apple Bake Ham (Australia), Pineapple Chicken Stir-fry (Thailand), and Roasted Pork Loin (Germany).
Interesting facts about our International Meals:
Baked Ham or Yule Ham traces it's origins back to Europe. Swedish, Finnish, German, and English cultures all have variations of serving boar during winter feasts and festivals. Over time this holiday tradition has traveled and evolved, today it's commonly served in parts of Australia, Philippines, Jamaica, and of course the U.S.
Thailand is known for its aromatic spiced cuisine. Classic flavors combine to form a wonderful balance of sweet, spicy, bitter, and salty. Whereas traditional Thai food consists of stewing, baking, and grilling; stir-frying was brought by the ancient Chinese who settled in Thailand over 1,400 hundred years ago. The technique of stir-frying meats, veggies, and sometimes fruits, melded well with customary Thai cooking.
Pork Loin or Schweinebraten is a hearty dish prepared in Germany. It's especially popular in the region of Bavaria, which is in the southeastern part of Germany. Side pairings commonly accompanied are sauerkraut, boiled potatoes, dumplings, and red or green cabbage. Historically, meat dishes were considered a specialty, and would have only been eaten on Sundays, or special holidays. Warm, tender, juicy roasts are a perfect option for this holiday season!
