Tips for Approaching a Shoplifter
The QPS recommends taking the following actions when choosing to engage with a shoplifter

1.  Explain who you are and your position within the store

2.  Tell the alleged shoplifter why they are being spoken to and ask that they cooperate in accompanying you back into the store

3.   Advise the alleged shoplifter that you will be contacting the police

4. Ask the alleged shoplifter to surrender any property which does not rightfully belong to them

5. Contact police (Note: if you are in a shopping centre, you can call upon security to attend the store as a third party witness until police arrive, however, security cannot detain an alleged shoplifter)

Understand that:

Under no circumstance should you use force against an alleged shoplifter
You should not physically touch the alleged shoplifter
You are not entitled to conduct searches of an alleged shoplifter
