To All The Ski Lovers in The Area

Some people love to water ski, My passion is snow skiing. After all, I was a ski instructor in my past life. What’s more, although I don’t have as many opportunities to engage in my favorite pastime as I would like, I try to keep up with the best that skiing has to offer at resorts within a few hours’ drive of Holly Springs.

I have noticed, for example, that just as skiing here on the east coast is quite different from the skiing found in the Rockies, there is a rather wide array of ski choices right here on the east coast as well. A case in point, the ski slopes here in North Carolina differ from those in nearby West Virginia. Plus, since December’s arrival means prime ski season has begun as well, now is the time to plan that ski weekend for this winter.

Keeping all of this in mind, I have devised a list of great ski resorts in both states that are sure to appeal to the variety of skiers in the Triangle area:

North Carolina

  • Sugar Mountain - Panoramic views from the mountaintops and powdery snow are just the beginning at this resort, the largest ski area around. With 20 ski runs as well as tubing and snowshoeing, this resort tops it all off with a 10,000-square-foot refrigerated outdoor ice skating rink!

  • Distance: 3.5 hours
  • Beech Mountain - At an elevation of 5,505 feet, Beech Mountain is the highest ski resort on the east coast. Providing options for both beginners and advanced skiers, it also offers tubing as well as childcare with fun activities at Snow Kamp.

  • Distance: 3 hours, 50 minutes

  • Appalachian Ski Mountain - An all-around great resort for families, Appalachian Ski Mountain features nine slopes with options for all skiing levels along with snowboarding and ice skating.

  • Distance: 3 hours, 50 minutes

West Virginia

  • Snowshoe - With two mountains, 251 acres and 38 trails — including two black diamond trails with 1500 foot vertical drops — Snowshoe is the area’s largest ski resort. Snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing round out the offerings.

  • Distance: 6 hours

  • Canaan Valley - Known for its family-friendly atmosphere, Canaan Valley offers 47 trails that appeal to every level of skier, with instructors for skiing and snowboarding. Snow tubing, snowshoeing, ice skating and cross-country skiing are additional attractions.

  • Distance: 6.5 hours

  • Timberline - An old favorite, Timberline Four Seasons Resort offers 37 runs along with the highest average vertical drop south of New England. With a ski school on the premises as well as comfy lodging, this is an all-inclusive setting.

  • Distance: 6.5 hours

At least one of these resorts is sure to draw you during this winter’s predicted cold temps. Whether you are a novice skier or an expert, I would love to hear about your experiences with these or other East Coast resorts.
