Ngā mihi a koutou katoa te whānau whanui o te Kura Pokapu o Whakatu –

Greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School.

As we head towards the end of the year it is phenomenal to see how much is going on and we are reminded what a dynamic, exciting place school is. These activities are not only a celebration of the children’s year, but also an valuable chance to put into practice much of the curriculum learning that has gone on throughout the year, especially in the areas of the key competencies. The opportunities that our tamariki have are a testament to how hard our kaiako work at this time of year. Thank you also to all the parent volunteers who give their time to make these opportunities possible.

At the end of Week 9 parents will receive updated report comments on LincEd. Now is an ideal time to revisit your child’s page and discuss with them the next steps that they have been working on.

This week we welcomed Rua Hegglun to Room 15, Garv Grover to Room 8 and Stephan Sharpan to Renwick 3. We trust that these children and their whānau will feel warmly welcomed into our school community. We also farewelled Max Strimling and wish him all the best in Christchurch.

Ngā mihi

John O’Regan

Deputy Principal

Kowhai News
Over the last 2 weeks in Kowhai we have been thinking about how to "Keep Ourselves Safe". Each class had 2 visits from Constable Susan. The first visit  helped us to learn about good and bad touch and how to say 'No' to touch we do not like. In the second lesson we learnt the difference between good and bad "Secrets and Tricks". You can find out more about this programme at this LINK
Afterwards we drew a picture or wrote a message to Constable Susan to demonstrate our learning.

Packing a waste free lunch

In our waste-filled lives, it’s important to do what we can to decrease the waste we’re contributing to the landfill. More and more schools are getting in on the act and requiring parents pack a waste free lunch some days of the week, if not all of them. What does this mean exactly?

Waste free means only packing items that can be composted or recycled and that won’t end up in the garbage bin. That means, no plastic wrap, no foil, no zip lock bags and no packaged foods.

Following these rules can be tricky, but it’s not impossible. First, you’ll need some containers – a lunch box with a variety of compartments works well or purchase a few smaller containers to hold different snacks. Here is a great recess snack, that is waste free consisting of hommus dip with veggie sticks.

  Hommus dip with veggie sticks

Paper bags also come in handy – they can be recycled or composted, so they don’t need to be added to the garbage. Have a chat with your child about how to dispose of them.

Here are some other tips:
  • Make a tray of muffins and keep them frozen. Remove one each morning and place it in the lunch box – it will thaw by lunch time.
  • Pop your own popcorn and pack it in a paper bag. Remind your child to dispose of the paper bag in the  recycle bin at school.
  • Make your own snack mix with dried fruit (apples, sultanas, banana), pepitas, sunflower seeds, and put in in a container for recess.
  • Pack a handful of dried cereal (such as Weet-bix bites or Cheerios) in a small reusable container.
  • Cut your own cheese slices and place them with crackers in a smaller tupperware container.
  • Make a smoothie at home and store it in a cold thermos that holds the temperature until recess or lunch time.
School Community Group

The Nelson Central School Community Group, alongside other members of the NCS community, organise and run the Central Challenge (Rogaine) and The Crank (Mini Mountain Bike) events which are our major fundraisers for the year. We need to hand over the reigns in 2019. Most of us can still be involved in the events and available to support and provide advice, however it's time for some other people to step up and take on the running of the event.

They are both really fantastic events that strengthen connections within our school community and with the greater Nelson community. It would be great if these events can continue as they are fun family friendly and healthy events that are coveted by other schools. Organising these events does involve a bit of time and commitment, but nearly all of the people who have been organising these events have been able to do it while managing paid work (and their families) at the same time.

The team have set up a lot of systems, to make it easy for people to take over running these events. There are lots of 'how to' lists and information to share. Many hands make light work.

Please contact us on scg@nelsoncentral.school.nz if you are interested in becoming part of the team to organise these events next year. There is a bit of work in it, of course, however it's also a lot of fun as well as very satisfying. We will be asking for volunteers for smaller jobs closer to the time, but would like to get the ball rolling this year with the management team.

There are various supervisory roles available for both events including; communications/ media, organising prizes, logistics, course/event manager, volunteer organiser, games/entertainment manager (for Central Challenge) and stalls manager. Each role can be shared and would have volunteers to support them. We will be there for support and guidance along the way.

We'd love to hear from you if you're interested. You do not have to be a member of the NCS Community Group. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards,
The Nelson Central School Community Group
