Happy December 1 lovelies!
Today I write to you from a place of grieving. I just read Rookie Magazine’s last post by founder Tavi Gevinson. Rookie has been around for 7 years, and was an inspiration to me when starting Pink Things. The amateur, yet compellingly genuine, submissions, the enthusiastic community, and the expanding platform were all aspirational. To see it fold is devastating, but also remarkably relatable. Pink Things doesn’t plan on folding anytime soon - but we aren’t financially profitable. We don’t pay ourselves or our contributors because we can’t. We don’t have advertisements because we want to stay uninfluenced in our content. But this means we are working purely on merit and donated time. That means we don’t post as often as we’d like, that sometimes things slip through the cracks, that we’re small because we don’t have the time or money or (wo)manpower to be bigger. Some of these contributed to Rookie's folding, some of them didn't. But for this we are sorry, and hope to continue creating content for as long as you want us.
On a lighter, but related, note - I would like to share with you that we are planning a redesign! New Year; new Pink Things. Come January 2019, we’ll have a new web design and print issue (finally)! As we grow and evolve, so must our platform. If there’s something here that you aren’t seeing, but you’d like, just respond to this email and we’ll take it into consideration.
I love you all, and thanks for reading and supporting us. It’s these connections and friendships that literally keep independent publications like Pink Things alive. We’re taking new submissions for the website, so if you used to contribute to Rookie or are someone who has something to say, we would love to publish your work.
xx Sarah
PS. I'm an internet queen.
