Advocates of the Year:
Legal Education Team
Every month, our Pro-Bono Coordinator helps to facilitate a Sealing and Expungement workshop at the Goodwill Job Connection Center in Sanford. Individuals who are trying to get jobs and move on from a criminal matter attend the seminar to receive advice on the sealing and expungement process.
Attorneys in Seminole County volunteer their time to educate the community about how to get a record sealed and expunged. Not only do they give an in-depth presentation on the process, the attorneys always stay afterwards to give each person individual advice on their situation. The care that they provide to these individuals is absolutely exceptional and due to this, we have named the team the Advocates of the Year in 2018. We thank them for their generosity of time and sharing of their legal knowledge.

Case Highlight
Timothy is a college student seeking an internship with a technology company.  Unfortunately, Timothy has been continuously declined for internship opportunities because when completing his applications, he indicates that he was convicted of a crime.  Many years ago, he was riding in a car with friends and was stopped and arrested when law enforcement found his friend’s illegal contraband. The charges were dropped but Timothy wanted to be honest on his applications and believed that he had to indicate that he was convicted of a crime. Timothy attended our sealing and expungement workshop and with the help of our legal education team, he learned how to complete the application and what he needed to do about his arrest record.  He feels relieved with the knowledge that he acquired at the workshop and looks forward to securing his internship and his first job in his field.

The Seminole County Legal Aid Society would like to wish everyone a wonderful holiday season and thank you all for your service and contributions to our organization.
