LAST MEETING

President Kenneth Friedman brought the November, 2018 meeting of the Ancient Coin Club of Los Angeles (ACCLA) to order at 1:31 PM. President Friedman welcomed everyone and reminded members that elections for next year’s Officers and Board Members will be held at the December meeting and to consider running. He then called for brief reports. Secretary, Michael Connor reported that the statistics program that monitors visitation to the Club website is working again. The Club Facebook page has 1,513 followers. He said he had talked with Joe Tooma, and Joe thought the January 2019 meeting would be the best time to hold the next club auction; this was agreed to by consensus. Roger Burry reported that the December 9 meeting will feature Randy Butler presenting Showdown at Pharsalus, 48 BCE; the January 13, 2019 meeting will be the Installation of Officers, annual potluck, and ACCLA Auction; at the February 10, 2018 meeting Glenn Barnett will talk about his book Emulating Alexander: How Alexander the Great's Legacy Fueled Rome's Wars With Persia.

With the holiday season coming up, the Secretary reminded members that if they are buying from Amazon to please go there using the special links on the Club website or in this Notice so that the ACCLA receives a commission.

The President discussed a possible group purchase of the new Spink edition of Greek Coins and Their Values: Western Europe and North Africa: Coins of Spain, Gaul, Italy, Sicily, Sardinia and North Africa by Italo Vecchi. About 10 members expressed interest. The book will be released February 14, 2019. Several members showed and talked about recent acquisitions. Randy Butler talked about his recent visit to the Autz Museum and Bode Museum in Berlin. Both have excellent coin exhibits.

Because of the ongoing wildfire situation, Mel Wachs had had to postpone his scheduled talk. Instead, Roger Burry stood in and gave two short interactive programs. The first was Is it Real or Fake? - Roger showed images of coins and the audience determined which were fakes or genuine and why. Roger’s second presentation was on the correct chronological arrangement of six coins of Augustus. This had stumped all sides in a prior team quiz game; but this time we got it right! Warm thanks to Roger for putting together two fun and educational programs at such short notice.
