Make the most of winter 2019

That’s it winter 2019 has begun and it's not too late to arrange a winter holiday!

Some of our guides have already reported excellent snow conditions cross country skiing in the French alps and downhill skiing in Switzerland, Austria and Italy. We’ve celebrated the best in outdoor adventure culture at the Kendal Mountain Festival, visited Montane and have an extensive headtorch review to help you with your sports during the winter months.

We are delighted to now be running a fabulous Snowshoe Tour in Bulgaria, a 5 day beginner cross country ski holiday to the stunning Swiss Alps and a 3 day Italian Ski Break ‘Improver' trip to Cogne. In Finland we will be running our first ‘Improvers' point-to-point ski tours along the Finnish-Russian Frontier and in Norway focus on the skills to ‘Be a Better Skier’. If that’s not enough to inspire you, then watch this lovely film of the Troll Ski Marathon which captures the route of our Trolls Trail holiday beautifully.

Kendal Mountain Festival

Celebrating the very best in outdoor and adventure sports culture

For many UK mountain lovers the annual Kendal Mountain Festival is a permanent fixture. It was a great pleasure this year for Tracks and Trails to be part of the action both as a guest speaker in the Mountain Running Session and in the Hood To Trail trail running film premiere. Read more.

Bulgaria - Land of Wild Mountains

Without a doubt Bulgaria has wonderful mountains offering some extraordinary opportunities for snowshoeing. With a reliable snowfall it is fast becoming a well-recognised destination for winter activities and is our new snowshoe trip for 2019. Bulgaria dates back to the 7th century making it one of the oldest states in Europe, and offering visitors, a true cultural experience. During this week of snowshoeing we will hike in various national parks in the Rhodope and Pirin mountains, which on average have 2 to 3 metres (6 to 9ft) of snow. Read more.

Finnish Frontiers and a Girl Called 'Aurora'

Featuring in winter 2019 is Finland. We have a great new ski trip for those who have done some cross-country, but now want to work on improving their technique. We spend three days at the famous winter resort of Vuokatti where you receive first class instruction to improve your skills and confidence, and then do a 3-day adventure journey along the Finnish Russian Frontier. This is a brilliant introduction to ski touring for those who are still in the early stages of their ski career and would like to truly travel on skis. Read more.

Headtorches for Running and Hiking

A guide to choosing a suitable headtorch for running or hiking, to help light up those dark nights and see you safely through from dusk til dawn.

Whether you’re heading out for an evening run, got caught out as the sun set on a hike, or just finding your way to the campsite facilities, a decent headtorch will make all the difference.

Advances in lighting capacity and battery technology now offer us a dazzling range to choose from, depending on our budget and needs. Simple models with minimal adjustment sit alongside more advanced models, offering programmable lighting modes, multiple beams, and even intelligent reactive lighting that economises battery power.
