Hello Everyone,
As I write this I am just winding up another very successful photographic workshop in the Annapurna and Mustang regions of Nepal.
It will be brief as the internet is not as good as one would like.
Firstly, the AGM has been and gone with all committee members voted back in and current positions held.
I look forward to working with the committee again for another year and at this point I would like to extend a very warm welcome to two new members who have joined our ranks.
Theo Van Meulen and Gary Smith have been elected to work with the VAPS committee and we really welcome new blood and new ideas into the ranks.
Theo, who is a member of Traralgon camera club is currently heading the convention sub committee there for 2019 and is already put in place many of the venues and catering services required. Members of VAPS will be heading down to the Latrobe Valley very soon to liaise with the sub committee to ensure all is going well and verify the arrangements for next year.
I certainly appreciate the work and effort put in by our members so that VAPS runs smoothly.

Mounting Techniques
Over the last few years we have had several issues with the mounting of prints for the annual Interclub competition and exhibition.
Poor mounting techniques
- Insufficient tape mounting the print to the matboard
- Insufficient double-sided tape where the backing board was the same size as the front mat board.
- Sticky tape used to adhere the backing board to the front matboard instead of masking tape.-Total thickness greater than 5mm. Thick prints take up more total space and hence a transport problem.
Understandably members have been upset when their prints come back damaged. As prints get handled up to 18 times during the judging/exhibition process, it is necessary for both the exhibition personnel and the print owners to protect prints appropriately. With this in mind, it would be an excellent step if comp stewards could promote the following requirements, so that their members become familiar with what is expected for the VAPS exhibition.Some clubs have changed their club rules to comply with VAPS exhibition rules to achieve this.
Most clubs already use the A2 art folio/folder. These are available from Office Works at a cost of $60. (recommend: Jasart A2 College Portfolio). The cheaper ones tend to fall apart after a while. Fifteen prints, if mounted appropriately, will comfortably fit into this type of folder. For clubs that are unable to obtain this folder a suitable folder will be supplied free of charge after VAPSCON 2019.
Because of this need to fit the required sized folder, there is a problem with the thickness of the mounted prints.The problem arises when some members use 5mm foam core backing instead of a piece of matboard taped to the back. This makes the finished print thicker than 5mm and the total thickness of 15 prints is then about 90mm which will not fit into one folder. Hence some clubs have sent their prints in a cardboard box or Australia Post bag.
5mm foam core backing is banned from 2019.Those members who persist in using foam core backing, may use 3mm foam core backing which is readily available.Total thickness of 3mm foam core and 1mm matboard will be about 4mm.
To ensure print protection, please promote the following:
Prints must be mounted correctly so that the matboard does not separate from the print or from the backing board. If you use double sided tape it must be at least 20mm wide and completely taped around all four sides. 10 mm pieces of tape do not adhere long enough.
Good quality masking tape (not painters masking tape) is available from any hardware store. Framing tape is preferable for attaching the print along the whole top edge to the matboard.
Prints should not be wrapped in cellophane as it has to be removed for judging and therefore creates extra handling and work for the volunteers.
Prints that have backing thicker than 3mm, or start to fall apart because they are not mounted correctly, will be withdrawn from the judging and the exhibition.
We ask that clubs change their practices and rules so that members do not have to prepare their prints specially for the VAPS Interclub.

FOR SALE
EPSON PRINTER MODEL 3880 – A2+ FORMAT - $500
One of Epson’s best ever Prosumer printers and renowned for the printer heads not clogging even when left unused for weeks. For that reason the printer head has been re-used in the most recent replacement model – the P800 [that costs $1,995 RRP]. The 3880 has never clogged on me and an occasional printer head test to keep the “wheels turning” are all it has ever needed to turn out beautiful prints.
It is in excellent cosmetic condition and in perfect working order. It is only on it’s second set of cartridges of which approximately 25% [on average] remain. New waste tank just installed.
The tanks hold 80ml per cartridge so ink costs in comparison to an A3+ printer are about 50% – a benefit if you print a lot [or “experiment” a lot!] Of course you should remember that the ink lines are already charged so there is not the waste that would occur with the purchase of a new printer with initialization of the lines.
A feature of this particular model is that it records the exact amount of ink used on a print which is very handy if you are looking to charge for your work.

On behalf of the Victorian 3D Society and the Sydney Stereo Camera Club we would like to invite you to join us for a weekend exploring the broad-ranging expressions of the magic of stereo photography. The 26th Australian National Stereo Convention will be held in the charming historical township Maldon, in North-Central Victoria. on Friday 10 May - Sunday 12 May, 2019.
Maldon is a lovely, picturesque little town in northern Victoria about 145 km north west of Melbourne and about 40 km south west of Bendigo. Its origins as a gold-mining town have left a remarkable heritage - historically, culturally and architecturally; Maldon was the first to be named an Historical Town by the National Trust. Within short distances are several old mines and various mining relics. There are many other historical attractions which highlight Maldon’s history from gold-rush times, including a vintage machinery and vehicle museum. Goldfields architecture and small town living are evident everywhere. There are loads of cafes and coffee shops, plenty of fine accommodation, lots of history, lots of modern amenities, a Christmas shop, a terrific mountaintop lookout and much more.
There’s a train direct from Melbourne to Castlemaine and a bus for the remaining 16 km to Maldon. We will also be able to pick up people from the station at Castlemaine and bring them to Maldon.
There are countless apartments and bed and breakfast type accommodation in Maldon. We are negotiating with a local agent who manages 12 of these and can help us coordinate the others. There is also a motel with 11 rooms and a caravan park with 11 fully self-contained cabins. The rooms in the motel are very nice but we should point out that the bathroom in each unit has a shower over the bath, so you have to step up over the edge of the bath to get into the shower. Both the motel and the caravan park have agreed to hold all the rooms for us on that weekend until the end of January.
The convention will include a ride on the vintage steam train that runs between Maldon and Castlemaine, a visit to the Maldon Sunday Market, loads of fabulous 3D shows and workshops, a sumptuous Convention Dinner and of course, the showing of the 2019 Southern Cross Exhibition of Stereo Photography.

The Ballarat Biennale announces a new Photography Award

The Ballarat International Foto Biennale have announced the launch of the New Photography Award. This award will place focus on young photographic artists working throughout the Asia Pacific region.
A selection of up to 6 artists will receive an exhibition within the 2019 Ballarat International Foto Biennale Core Program, 23 rdAugust to 20 thOctober 2019, have their work showcased in a venue with other finalists, and receive one-on-one support from BIFB curators in the realisation of their exhibition.
All applicants will have their submissions reviewed by an international jury of leading curators and gallery directors. Judges will award one cash prize of $10,000 to an overall winner.

Martin Kantor Portrait Prize
Entries are now open for the 2019 Ballarat International Foto Biennale Martin Kantor Portrait Prize.
The Martin Kantor Portrait Prize is an acquisitive first prize of $15,000, generously supported by the Dara Foundation, showcasing the diversity and rich talent of photographic portraiture. The prize will be awarded to the work judged to be an exceptional photographic portrait of a living significant Australian, distinguished in art, letters, science, sports or politics. The exhibition is part of the Core Program in the 2019 Ballarat International Foto Biennale, 23 rdAugust to 20 thOctober 2019.
This award honours the late portrait photographer Martin Kantor.

A Brief History:
Camera clubs have existed in Melbourne since the 1890’s and an umbrella organisation called the Victorian Photographic Affiliation was formed in 1908. This guided amateur photography in Victoria for forty years. The Victorian Association of Photographic Societies was formed on 27 September 1952 and comprised of 12 clubs. This has grown to more than 70 clubs in Jan 2016. VAPS is a non-profit association that is entirely self-funded. The Association is run by an elected Committee of Management which is responsible for the operations of the Association, and for ensuring the Association fulfils the objectives.
