READ ALUMNI MAGAZINE; MAKE YOUR YEAR-END GIFT

For longtime donor Jane Swicegood, “the act of giving ... has been more fulfilling than I could have imagined.”

Check out her first-person essay titled "Why I support the J-school" in this fall's Cursor magazine, which should reach the mailboxes of nearly 4,000 alums this week.

“The School of Journalism emphasizes and requires that students train in what I consider basic traits of character: integrity, ethics, respect, accuracy, diligence, creative thinking, curiosity and
determination,” Swicegood said.

Please join her in making a difference in a student journalist's life with a year-end donation to help fund high-tech equipment, investigative reporting projects and travel, and hands-on publication experience.

Mail a check, using the postage-free envelope inside the magazine, or give online through a secure UA Foundation site. Gifts made or postmarked by Dec. 31 will be eligible for 2018 tax benefits.

This year's magazine focuses on the school's broadcast program, which has seen hundreds of graduates land jobs in the past decade. Senior Hector Ponce graces the cover in a photo taken by recent graduate Simon Asher. The cover package includes a "Where are they now?" list and a feature on the school's "Arizona Cat's Eye" program.

Also in the issue:

• Meet Carol Schwalbe, the second woman to lead the UA journalism program, and read her director's letter on innovation.

• Student news, including a feature on master's candidate Dalal Radwan of Palestine and a story on the school's new Native American seed grant scholarships.

• Faculty news, including feature stories on Michael McKisson and Celeste González de Bustamante and achievements by other professors.

• Ten pages of alumni news, notes and obituaries.

• Two photo pages on the school's Hall of Fame and top events of 2018.

Retiring Wimmer
honored by faculty

Faculty and staff honored retiring Professor Terry Wimmer during a heartfelt luncheon Dec. 6 at Sinbad's near campus.

Professor Linda Lumsden (above, with Wimmer) organized a school gift for the Arizona Sonora News adviser, a photo by former Professor Jay Rochlin.

Professor Susan Knight read testimonials from former students, some of which can be found at the "Wimmer stories" Facebook group page, run by Dan Desrochers ('15).

The Dec. 7 Tombstone Epitaph was the final issue for Wimmer, who came to UA in 2006 and has an editor's letter on Page 2. Read it here.

Watch a video of Professor Jeannine Relly's tribute to Wimmer and see more photos here. Stay tuned for a bigger story on Wimmer in the January e-Cursor.

2 teams to develop products with Star

Four students in Professor Michael McKisson's product development class will work with the Arizona Daily Star in the spring to develop products for the community.

Ava Garcia and Rocky Baier (top, from left) and Phillip Bramwell and Erin Thomson (bottom) made the winning pitches Dec. 10 before an audience that included Star Editor Jill Jorden Spitz ('88). See it here.

Garcia's and Baier's “Tu Salud Tucson” will be a healthcare app to help people from the Latinx community. Bramwell's and Thomson's "AccessAbility" will be a hub for people with physical disabilities to find info on accessible places.

Each team receives
$4,700 and will work with Becky Pallack and the Star's innovation desk.

Adrian captures 1st
in Gyorke contest

Kasey Adrian won the fall 2018 Drew Gyorke Memorial Fund Photo Contest and $200 for her image of a student walking home after a long day at the UA Library.

Alana Minkler took second ($125) with a photo of a rock climber on Mount Lemmon, while Karyme Cuadras finished third ($75) with a portrait of a tattoo artist.

These photos and nine others from Professor Kim Newton's beginning photojournalism class will hang in the hallway near Room 327 in the Marshall Building, 845 N. Park Ave., next semester.

Drew Gyorke, an adventurer and aspiring photojournalist, died his junior year in a May 2013 car accident. The contest, endowed by his family, began in fall 2013.
