Joy by the bucket full

Helping others is what we do and this Christmas, we'll fill 300 yellow buckets with gourmet Christmas goodies and gift them to local people who need it most.

The Yellow Bucket Appeal is celebrating its fourth year of bringing joy to people who either live alone, have a disability or need to know that someone cares.

“Christmas is meant to be a special time of the year filled with love and happiness,” said Penny Hamilton, YellowBridge QLD chief executive officer.

“Sadly, this is not the case for some people who will spend Christmas alone or are unable to afford extra special food to make it a memorable day for them and their family,” she said.

"With the help of our staff and supporters, we aim to fill and deliver 300 buckets with edible joy."

The majority of the Christmas food and products are donated by our staff, partners and supporters who have embraced the annual appeal and the opportunity to ‘give back’ to others in their local community.

The emphasis is on Christmas food that is gourmet or special rather than staple food items, which are covered so well by other Christmas appeal initiatives in the region.

Recipients are chosen based on their known need. YellowBridge staff then deliver the hampers prior to Christmas Day to people who either live alone, have a disability or need to know that someone cares. They are also distributed to people nominated by YellowBridge’s peer organisations in the housing, disability, youth and aged services sectors.

“It is a true collaboration between us, our partners and our like-minded industry peers to deliver these beautiful buckets of joy to people at this special time of year,” Ms Hamilton said.

Toowoomba accounting firm, McConachie Stedman, is the Appeal’s major sponsor for the third year and their support helps with the costs of running the initiative.

“It gives me great pride to see the generosity of our staff and clients who embraced the Appeal last year, filling over 30 buckets. Fingers crossed we can match or better that again this year, helping YellowBridge with their target of 300 buckets,” Director Amanda Roberts said.

“I was very fortunate to be involved behind the scenes with the Appeal last year and was overwhelmed by the generosity of people who donated their time or Christmas goodies to bring joy to those who otherwise may not have felt the Christmas spirit,” Mrs Roberts said.

“I also had the privilege to deliver some of these buckets and witness the sheer joy from those who unexpectedly received them. ‘Buckets of Joy’ is such an appropriate name for them, as that is definitely what they are.”

“I’d encourage everyone to donate some Christmas goodies towards the Appeal this year, knowing the joy that these will bring.”

A mo-vellous effort

Congratulations to our big-hearted staff who stepped up and banished the razor to raise money for men's health with Movember Foundation Australia.
Thanks to their many supporters, they raised $2000, which is a fantastic result.
Men's physical and mental health is an important cause and we're so grateful to you for digging deep to help us this year.

Renovated cottage

The renovations at our Stepping Stone Cottage are complete and we recently had the chance to thank all of the special people who helped make it possible. We were particularly honoured to have Dianne Surtees (pictured middle) join us. Dianne co-founded The Haven 32 years ago and built the 'cottage' where she raised her family while helping young people in crisis. Her vision is why we are able to help young people experiencing homelessness today.

Our sincere thanks to:
- Suncorp South West Queensland donated money through their Workplace Giving Program and staff volunteered to help paint the interior and held a raffle to raise money for extra household items
- VES Plumbing and Gas donated labour and materials to renovate the bathroom
- Toowoomba & Districts Masonic Council provided a grant to fix the guttering
- Tradelink Toowoomba donated bathroom fittings
- Hilec Electrical donated electrical labour
- Toowoomba Betta Home Living donated the new couch
- Beaumont Tiles donated bathroom tiles
- G.James Glass & Aluminium donated mirror and shower screen
- Bunnings donated wall sheeting
- Peacehaven Park and Gus Hamilton donated labour and native plants for the garden
- Lutheran Youth of Queensland who helped with the painting, built a fire pit and pallet furniture, and made some artwork for the interior walls

Christmas cards

It's not too late to get your limited edition YellowBridge charity Christmas cards.
This year, we've produced a beautiful selection of 10 unique Christmas cards. Each card features a watercolour painting by one of our staff members and a Christmas message.
They are printed on high quality card stock and available from our boutique op shop Collectables at 2 Station St. Packs of 5 cards are just $12.
All proceeds from the sale of the cards are used to support our community work.

Rachel goes to school

We're visiting local schools and sharing our children's story book with them.
Rachel's Quest was written and illustrated by 16 young people and now we get to share their achievement with their school mates.
The book was launched during National Disability Action Week to help people recognise that everyone has something they can do.
We recently visited Withcott State School, Glenvale Christian School and Wyreema State School. This week, we're off to Mater Dei Primary School.
For a copy of the book, visit Collectables at 2 Station Street.  They are free with any donation.

Deep pockets, big hearts

We were honoured to present at Hand Heart Pocket's Annual Review in Brisbane last month.
The Queensland charity of the Freemasons funds an enormous number of projects, this year donating $2.2 million to worthy causes across Queensland and Papua New Guinea.
We were privileged to receive $450,000 this year to help us build and purchase a custom three-bedroom unit for people with a disability.

Home Care Packages - NOW AVAILABLE

We now offer a comprehensive range of support and home services under the Government subsidised home care packages.
This is great news for our older clients who now have the convenience of accessing all their home services needs through us. We have a trusted network of local partners who will help us provide services for personal and domestic care, lifestyle and wellness, and nursing care.

CEO's Comment

Penny Hamilton, Chief Executive

There are so many reasons why I love Christmas. As a 30 year collector of international Christmas decorations I just love the moment, every year, when the decorations resurface and adorn one of my seven real trees.

I also adore the Christmas fare … this is when the best food is cooked. You get to fill up and eat more than you ever had. This is also the time when the desserts outnumber the previous courses … how delicious is that? But what I love the most is that there is such a thing as Christmas spirit and it is heartening that it heralds in bucket loads from all corners of our Toowoomba community.

We certainly see this spirit of giving in our Yellow Bucket Appeal which delivers 'buckets of joy' to people in our community who need it most. We are so grateful to our staff and many business partners who take up the call to generously assist us in filling 300 buckets with gourmet Christmas food. Our recipients always reward this generosity with heartfelt thanks, big smiles and a few tears.

We are honoured to have local Toowoomba accounting firm, McConachie Stedman, support us for the third year as our major sponsor. This company has a strong sense of community spirit and we are grateful for their ongoing support.
Together, we look forward to delivering our 'buckets of joy' and helping more people in our community to experience what makes Christmas special.
