Kia ora and greetings,
Whaea Te Owai Gemmel and Whaea Hera Pierce, meeting with Undersecretary Jan Logie
TOAH-NNEST is excited at the development of the Joint Venture announced by Undersecretary Jan Logie on 28 September 2018.  Ten Cabinet Ministers and Chief Executives working together to ensure a collaborative and integrated “whole-of-Government" response to addressing the unacceptably high rates of family and sexual violence in Aotearoa is a positive step in the right direction.

A partnership with Māori is an essential piece of the new way of working. Te Rōpū (Independent Māori body) has been set up as an interim advisory group to work with the Crown, Ministers and the joint venture to help inform National strategic development and ensure aronga Māori are included.

The specialist sexual violence sector has worked for many years and called on Governments of the day to collaborate with the sector to address the harm caused by sexual violence.and we are hopeful the new joint venture will ensure collective responsibility is held at both Government and NGO levels to ultimately end sexual violence in Aotearoa.

The first most significant short-term piece of work will be the development of a national strategy and action plan.  This will set a clear direction for our collective commitment to reduce family and sexual violence, clarifying the most critical strategic objectives and identifying the actions required across the system. The work will then focus on implementing the action plan.

TOAH-NNEST is saddened to hear of the passing of the inspirational Eva McGauley last week. Eva worked hard to make a difference for survivors in Aotearoa, contributing in so many ways. We are grateful to have witnessed the power of youth leadership and her determination to see funding being invested in developing online support for young people who are impacted by sexual violence.

Kaupapa Māori Good Practice Guidelines

NKM Pae members are in the early stages of developing KM good practice guidelines.  A literature review is underway and we are excited about this hugely important kaupapa to inform good practice across the entire sector from an aronga Māori.

Te Matatini 2019

NKM is thrilled to have secured a stall at Te Matatini (National Kapa Haka competition) at Westpac stadium, Wellington.

It’s one of the biggest events in Māoridom where whānau from all around Aotearoa and Australia come together to watch, celebrate, compete and support kapa haka rōpū. While the groups are performing during the days there will be stalls placed around the venue for kai, merchandise and wellbeing.

NKM is placed in the Haurora section where our kuia will be interacting with whānau. There will be kaupapa Māori resources and the chance to come and have a kōrero. We want to let whānau know who we are and what we do as an organisation

Nau mai, haere mai ki te tēneti o Ngā Kaitiaki Mauri

If you're interested in coming along to Te Matatini, tickets are available to buy

Tauiwi Caucus Updates

E-Learning Pilot:
Introduction to Specialist Sexual Violence Crisis Work

On the 30th of October, TOAH NNEST Tauiwi caucus launched the next phase of pilots for the E-Learning. We have chosen to run 2 pilots at the same time, using to our advantage the online delivery space.

One of the pilots, Pilot 2, includes sexual violence experts and key internal stakeholders who are testing:
  • Usability of the Learning Hub; and
  • Content.and learner experience.
The other pilot, Pilot 3, includes 3 organisations who are doing the course as a team, Through this process, beyond what is listed above, we are also exploring:
  • What will work in integrating this course within the workplace?
  • How could workplaces use the social functions of the Learning Hub?
  • What do organisations need to run this by themselves?
Across Pilot 2 and 3, we have a total of 81 participants testing and exploring this e-Learning course. Some learnings so far:
  • It is easy for TOAH NNEST to administer the Learning Hub, and we could have double the learners without too much extra effort;
  • The length, voice and visual elements of the videos are really important for learner engagement;
  • The Learning Hub is easy to use and most people are accessing without additional support.
