Free Book Fair!
Thanks to recent book drives, United Way’s 100,000 Books initiative again has books that you can have to support your students’ developing reading skills.  The books are a mix of new and gently used books and are for a variety of age groups, although this year’s selection appears to have more in the pre-k to 3rd grade range.

We will be holding a free book fair on Thursday, December 13th from 9 am until 1 pm at United Way’s office (1250 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222).  The books will be sorted the day before, so bring some boxes and select as many as you want. It will be first come - first serve, so come early.

To promote this love of reading, 100,000 Books builds on research that demonstrates the importance of connecting a caring adult or older student with a child.  This mentor model has been shown to have a significant impact on the life of a child and will be the primary model that 100,000 Books uses to support reading skills development.  Mentors (teachers, librarians, youth workers, caring adults, older students…) will reinforce reading skills through one time and on-going read-along opportunities that will help kids to build this critical love of reading. To quality for these books, your program must use this mentor – reader model.

Nominate a Champion of Learning
Who is your champion? Champions use their personal time, resources, and talents to support learning and inspire youth. These are the adults who pull youth out of rough situations, push them to do better, and inspire them to keep going. Champions of Learning is a collaboration between the Consortium for Public Education and United Way’s Be There Campaign, that recognizes adults in western PA who go above and beyond to create opportunities and motivate students. Help us celebrate the adults that inspire our children!
