Taylor Downs Awarded Best Paper at ARNOVA Conference

Taylor Downs, PhD student in International Conflict Management wins best paper for his paper titled "Understanding Internal Social Movement Differences and Framing in the Movement Against the Dakota Access Pipeline" at the 2018 annual ARNOVA Conference in Austin, Texas. 

The Conference Theme was “ From Relief to Resilience: How Philanthropy, Nonprofits and Volunteers Bridge the Gap between Crisis and Sustainability”.  The requirements were for the paper to address the Conference Theme and VRADS Mission. In addition, it must be accepted by ARNOVA as a paper presentation at the 2018 Conference. Lastly, authors or lead author must be a matriculated student or have graduated within one year of when the paper is submitted for award consideration.

Cohort 19 Travels to Germany for Annual Study Abroad

Cohort 19 traveled to the University of Otzenhausen in Saarland, Germany to study Human Rights and the Council of Europe, European Law, and Immigration, and Conflict Management. Stay tuned for student blog posts about their journey!
The School of Conflict Management, Peacebuilding and Development welcomed 25 Nigerian guests on December 3 for a week-long leadership workshop taught by the Center for Conflict Management.

Congratulations to MSCM Cohort 19 and INCM Doctoral Candidates Fall 2018! 

Candidate: Christina Edwards

Vittorio Indovina, PhD Student, participated in an international mediation event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The event was organized by the Centro Brasileiro de Mediacao e Arbitragem, a prestigious nonprofit organization for dispute resolution founded by important Brazilian and local industries and commerce associations. On Nov 8, he joined a panel of experts talking about the Italian law regulating the profession of civil and commercial mediator. On Nov 9, he gave a lecture on the Italian model of mandatory mediation, which is of interest for many international experts in the field of mediation.

Penny King, Cohort 17, accepted a new role as Project Manager with the Project Management Office within the Learning and Information Technology Department at Emory University. 
Amanda Dean, Cohort 16, co-wrote "A clear way wise companies can avoid Uber's big mistake," related to her Ombuds work at UC Berkeley. 
Cody WehlanPhD student, joyfully announces the winners of the StateCraft Simulation, a game that illustrates International Relations, conflict, and peacebuilding. A great introduction to undergraduates taking their first International Relations course. The thirty-two students divided into seven teams, each tasked with developing policies, infrastructures, and international relationships with fellow nations. Last week represented the ending of the simulation, with each country receiving reward-themed candy related to their accomplishments in the game. Such awards included Warheads for Most Militarily Powerful, 100 Grand Candy for Most Wealthy, and Smarties for Most Educated.

Faculty & Staff News:

Brandon Lundy and Sarasij Majumder presented at the American Anthropological Association's annual meeting in San Jose, CA this week. Dr. Lundy presented his paper "Entrepreneurship, Mutuality, and the Human Economy: Demystifying Transnational Work in Lusophone West Africa" and met with prospective authors for the journal Economic Anthropology. Dr. Majumder presented "Tacit Entanglements: Capturing “Sticky Knowledge” in a Transnational Knowledge Economy" and participated in the launch of his new book People's Car (Fordham University Press 2019).
Jesse Benjamin was awarded the annual KSU Oustanding Teaching Award. 
Anne Richards was awarded the annual KSU Oustanding Research & Creative Activity Award in the area of Interdisciplinary Research. 
Nicole Densmore and Nicole Connelly were nominees for Kennesaw State University's Oustanding Customer Service award.  







 

This call for papers is designed to elicit a thoughtful examination of efforts to build and sustain peace through the application of conflict resolution theories, processes and practices across fractious divides such as ethnicity, gender and
gender identification, religion, nationality, immigration status, social class, political party affiliation, or other sources of identity-based conflict. Each article should include a review of any applicable literature and support all claims with research and references.

All submissions on this topic are welcome. Suggested topics might include but are not limited to:

  • How can we apply peacebuilding lessons from Kosovo, Rwanda, and other societies to the challenges facing
    the US and Western Europe?
  • Strategies for effective dialogue and problem-solving across divides.
  • Examples of peacebuilding efforts from around the world, with relevant lessons for peacebuilders in the US or
    elsewhere.
  • Evaluation of peacebuilding efforts with generalizable lessons.
  • Curricula designed to prepare peacebuilding practitioners or researchers at all levels, from primary school
    through graduate schools.
  • The use of community members and capacity building efforts designed to enhance civil society at the local,
    national or international levels for the purposes of peacebuilding.
  • Studies focused on identifying the sources of identity-based conflict of use to peacebuilding efforts.
  • All other relevant works related to the theory and/or practice of peacebuilding. 

All articles should reflect an understanding of previous discussions in the literature on the chosen question (a literature review), include a 100-word abstract, and meet CRQ formatting guidelines. CRQ uses a double-blind peer review process to assure fair and equal access to all authors. Deadline is March 1, 2019. Submissions received after this date may be considered for inclusion in a later edition of CRQ.







 

The Journal of Peacebuilding and Development is calling for papers for Volume 14 Number 3, which is to be published in December 2019. JPD foregrounds qualitative methodologies, especially empirically based case studies that facilitate grounded and fresh analysis to serve theory, policy and strategy development. JPD offers a space for scholars and practitioners to examine the logic and impacts of dominant policies and practices, and to cultivate visionary, holistic approaches striving to advance collaboration between the fields of peacebuilding and development. Our authors, advisors and editorial staff represent global scholarship, practice and activism.

Articles submitted to the Journal should be original contributions and are subject to peer review. With occasional exceptions, the editors prioritize articles based on empirically grounded case studies. All submissions must link issues of peace and/or conflict with some aspect of development. Please indicate clearly if the article is under consideration by another publisher. Articles are read by the journal’s editors as well as by two to four outside reviewers.

The following types of submissions will be considered: 

  • Full articles: critical case studies and/or thematic discussion and analysis of topical peacebuilding and development themes, 7,000 word maximum, including references and endnotes;
  • Briefings: discussions of 1) training, peacebuilding and intervention strategies and impact, 2) policy review/analysis, or 3) country briefings, 2,500 word maximum; 
  • Policy Dialogues: short policy briefings engaging two key topics on the international policy agenda: The New Deal on Engagement with Fragile States, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, 2,500 word maximum 
  • Book reviews: 1000 word maximum for single reviews, 2,500 if multi-book review/analysis; 
  • Resources: notices of new books, reports, upcoming conferences, videos, e-communications and websites, 150 word maximum; 
  • Documents: declarations, communiqués, and other relevant NGO or multilateral organization statements, 1,000 word maximum.

Submission deadline: Authors are advised to send abstracts only by CfP deadline of January 15, 2019. They should be 250-500 words, and indicate if intention is a full article (7000 words) or briefing (2500 words). Full submissions that miss this deadline may be considered until February 22, 2019 depending on space, but can still be referred to future issues.

Notre Dame Student Peace Conference Call for Proposals

We are pleased to announce the annual Notre Dame Student Peace Conference, scheduled for March 29-30, 2019 at the University of Notre Dame.

This year’s theme is Expanding Circles: Peace in a Polarized Age?, which concentrates on inclusive approaches to strategic peacebuilding in today's divided social, political, and international systems. Focusing on major issues such as the increase in displaced peoples, rising global powers, nationalism, mass shootings, and political divisiveness, we will explore questions surrounding decision-making, access, power, and violence; evaluate these current structures; and brainstorm creative pathways forward.

We invite the students from your institution interested in peace-related issues to submit proposals that highlight both research and/or practice. Students can propose innovative presentations or sessions of all types: research papers or posters; presentations on experiential learning; panel discussions; roundtable discussions on current issues; workshops or trainings; artwork, performance, or media projects; or other project formats that would engage a peer audience on the topics of polarization, inclusiveness, and peacebuilding.

We have attached the Call for Proposals and would appreciate your help sharing it with your students and encouraging their participation. The deadline for submission is January 21, 2019, though proposals submitted before this date may be given preference in the selection process.
