Have your own idea for how to support Austin's urban forest?
Thinking of planting trees at a local park or school? Looking to care for trees along your sidewalk? The Urban Forest Grant may be able to help! Funds available for projects that benefit Austin’s urban forest. Rolling deadlines. Contact Austin Community Foundation for more information and to learn if your project meets eligibility.

It's Planting Season!
The best time to plant trees in Texas has arrived! When temperatures drop and daylight hours decrease, trees rest for winter. During this winter rest period, trees are less likely to be stressed by the shock of transplantation and will have time to adjust to their new location before the growth period begins again in spring.

Want to get active in our urban forest?

Plant a tree and care for our public spaces. Austin's lakes, green spaces, and trails make it a great place to get outside---even in winter!
  • Flex all your trail improvement muscles with The Trail Foundation, who maintain trails, benches, plantings and more along the 10-mile Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake (that's Town Lake if you're a long time Austinite).
  • Clean up a local park or help to organize your own clean up with Keep Austin Beautiful.
  • Plant trees to protect our creeks from erosion and bring vibrant biodiversity to the land with TreeFolks volunteer mornings.
  • Stay in the know with local organizations like Austin Parks Foundation for updates on local volunteer events.

Get your own free tree. Trees are available for free for anyone who has space to plant one and give it care. Check out TreeFolks for ways to bring home a tree for your property. Learn more about available rebates and resources for landscape learning from Grow Green

And to send you into your holidays...
Enjoy these two haikus written by members of the City of Austin's Community Tree Preservation Division.

Haiku One —
Listen to the sound —
leaves blow in the winter wind.
Close your eyes, listen.

Haiku Two —
An Ashe juniper:
home to our sweet-songed friend, dear
golden-cheeked warbler.
