The Digest 12/03/2018

Hello all -

There's an interesting piece on The Verge today revealing that YouTube is soon to abandon its subscription service Premium in favour of serving that same content up on an ad-supported basis. YouTube has experimented in the subscription space for some time now, but with this revelation it feels like an admission that - not unlike SoundCloud to some extent, its users cannot be convinced to convert to a monthly subscription arrangement. If that is true however, where does that leave YouTube Music?

Over in Facebook's world, it is almost amusing to see that the exec in charge of label partnerships for Europe has just been poached by Warners to take up a senior VP role at the company. A smart hire, it seems. Scroll down a little more and it also fits with a broader narrative - specifically Facebook employees looking to jump ship to new roles elsewhere as the company looks increasingly like a liability on one's CV. Has the exodus begun? Possibly - though I'm sure there'll be no shortage of people lining up for new roles there.

Have a great evening,

D.

YouTube rolls out Stories to creators with over 10K subscribers

A year ago, YouTube launched its own take on Stories, with the addition of a new short-form video format called Reels. The feature, which was rebranded as “YouTube Stories” at last year’s VidCon, was initially available only to select YouTube creators. But in June, YouTube said it would later in the year expand Stories to all creators with more than 10,000 subscribers. Today, it has done just that. Now, YouTube is beginning to roll out Stories to a wider set of creators, giving them access to the new creation tools that include the ability to decorate the videos with text, stickers, filters and more. The feature is very much inspired by rival social apps like Snapchat and Instagram — except that,  in YouTube’s case, Stories disappear after 7 days, not 24 hours.

Apple Music now has 56 million subscribers

Apple Music has reportedly hit 56 million subscribers, an increase on the 50 million that Apple CEO Tim Cook announced back in May. The figure comes from a new Financial Times article, regarding Apple’s plans to potentially get its Beats 1 station on terrestrial radio. The report is a follow-up from a previous FT article concerning Apple’s plans to acquire a stake in struggling radio group, iHeartMedia. Apple is said to be considering purchasing a stake in the radio group. It may also sign a marketing or promotional partnership.

YouTube Premium is changing because it has to

YouTube is gearing up to offer its prestige lineup of original series and films for free to all users, turning to its traditional ad-supported system in an attempt to bring in more viewers. The company is looking to pull back on its ad-supported programs by 2020, limiting the number of original series and films it orders, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Series that are ordered, which include a few with Hollywood star talent attached, will be available to all YouTube users for free, regardless of whether they’ve signed up for YouTube Premium. In the past, pilot episodes were free to watch, but users had to pay a monthly $12 fee to watch the entire series.

Instagram now lets you choose who can — and can't — see your Stories

Instagram Stories are great for quickly sharing what’s going on in your life – but sometimes you don’t want all your followers to see them. The app’s new Close Friends feature makes it easier to restrict your Stories to a select group of people, so you don’t have to worry about your boss, your parents, or random strangers having a look. To access this feature, go to your profile and tap on ‘Close Friends’ in the side menu to begin creating a list of people you’d like to share Stories with. Your list of close friends can be viewed only by you, so others won’t know that they’re being kept out of the loop.

Streamlabs CEO describes building monetization tools for Twitch & YouTube

When streaming first began to rise in popularity, there was no one sanctioned set of tools which covered all the needs of streamers and viewers. You cobbled together third-party software as best you could, and the good widgets spread by word of mouth. Over time, the various extensions and widgets that served those needs have consolidated into a few stand-out tools — besides Streamlabs, there’s also the likes of Nightbot, StreamElements, and Muxy, all of which offer similar features for streamers. When the company first started out, its major claim to fame was TwitchAlerts, which allowed streamers to put on-screen visuals to their viewer interactions. Moiz said the company added different tools to the service as the demand from streamers grew. Since 2014, Streamlabs has built a number of other tools for the streamer clientele base it’s cultivated.

Major Labels Talk 'Isolated' Brazil, Streaming Prices and Data, Data, Data at Midem Rio

Brazil's "isolated" music market must align itself more tightly to Spanish-speaking Latin America if it is to seize on the huge opportunity created by the explosion of digital music and streaming, a label executive said Tuesday. "It's a mistake for Brazilians to forget about their neighbors," said Paulo Lima, the president of Universal Music Group in Brazil, speaking on a panel at the Midem event in Rio de Janeiro.   The rise of digital music, especially streaming, and the "'Despacito' effect," have "changed the position of Latin America in the world," Lima said.

Tencent Music may start trading publicly on 12 December

Hold that speculation that Tencent Music’s IPO may slip into 2019. Bloomberg is reporting that the Chinese music-streaming giant may begin trading in New York on 12 December, having delayed its IPO from October. Although the story carries a prominent caveat: “Timing of the offering hasn’t been finalised and could change depending on market conditions.” The article comes shortly after speculation that Tencent Music might wait until next year to go public, in an effort to ride out the current bumpy market that’s seen Spotify’s share price fall, but which has also dented wider tech stocks.

Huawei claims its music-streaming service has 100m users

“The company has services such as cloud storage, music streaming and video content, which are little known outside of China,” reported CNBC. “It’s something the company doesn’t talk much about but it claims Huawei Music, its music streaming platform, has 100 million monthly active users.” Several of Music Ally’s sources in China expressed surprise at the figure: discussion there tends to focus on Tencent Music’s three services (QQ Music, Kuwo and KuGou) and NetEase Cloud Music. Yet the 100m figure may not be that outlandish: a report in March on Huawei’s plans to launch its music service in South Africa claimed that it had 32 million daily active users in China, for example, and based on that, a monthly total of 100 million isn’t out of the question.

Facebook employees calling former colleagues to look for jobs outside

The shift could be an early warning of recruiting and retention challenges for Facebook after a turbulent year. In 2018, the company has faced public questioning at multiple congressional hearings, scandals around third-party abuse of user data and public relations practicesand flat or declining user growth in key markets. It's also seen its stock drop nearly 40 percent from July. The stories from former employees are only anecdotal at this point, and there's no firm data showing a significant uptick in departures or employee dissatisfaction.

Analogue’s Ghostly-themed Super Nt SNES features custom sounds

Today, Analogue is revealing the Ghostly LE version of the Super Nt. Like the standard model, it’s a console designed to play your old SNES cartridges on a modern TV, with a whole host of extra features. (You can find out more about it in our review.) The Ghostly edition is different in a few ways. It sports a bright, clean shade of white, for one thing, along with the label’s logo right on the front. More interesting, though, is that it also has seven distinct startup chimes, each composed by a different Ghostly artist. They’re short — the longest clocks in at 10 seconds — but it’s a completely unique way to hear new sounds from the likes of Gold Panda and Shigeto.
