December Blessings

I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December
A magical thing
And sweet to remember.

'We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September,'
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December.
- Oliver Herford

The rain has been steadily dripping through the trees, soaking through our moss-lawn. Although the soggy weather precludes us from venturing out, the robins are hopping around having a heyday. I count at least 20 from the kitchen window, ripping out tufts of moss looking for grubs and gobbling red berries from the holly tree. It takes me a while to realize I have stopped chopping and mixing to just quietly gaze outside.

Calm and quietude are gifts of winter, along with rest, restoration, and rejuvenation. I share more on winter's gifts in this final newsletter for 2018, plus a delicious medicinal (not code for "alcoholic") hot cocoa recipe, and some thoughts on the difference between expectations and intentions.

As the end-of-year and holiday cheer approach their zenith, join me in seeking the quiet moments that follow the din. I invite you to set aside some time the last week of December to cocoon with a warm drink, review the past year, and set your intentions for the next.

Thank you for being a cyber-companion for the first year of Goldenrod. I am so grateful for your warm wishes, encouragement, and feedback. I wish you simple joys and pleasures that lighten your heart this holiday season.

The Gifts of Winter

The phrase "Winter is coming" struck fear in hearts long before the popularity of Game of Thrones. Is it any wonder given the tempestuous weather and darker days? But winter both symbolizes and offers quiet, solitude, rest and potentiality. Discover how to synchronize your daily routine with the rhythm of winter to make the most of this season of restoration.
Hot Chocolate Elixir

When sweet treats are tempting and ever-present, try a healthy cold-weather drink that becomes absolutely magical with the addition of immune-boosting herbs. Get more bang for your buck (or chocolate for your cocoa) in this grown-up recipe for hot chocolate elixir you can easily whip up at home.
Intention vs. Expectation

Holidays bring not only good intentions, but also heavy expectations. Expecting everything to be perfect, or conversely, expecting things to go wrong or be difficult can be an undue burden. Worse, having expectations presupposes a certain outcome, while setting intentions leaves you open to possibility. Perhaps the easiest way to demonstrate the difference between the two is this: although I intended to write a post on this topic for this newsletter, you can expect it next year.

Ready or not, the holidays are here! Have you tried this quick, healthy and delicious pumpkin pie recipe yet? Family gatherings are the perfect time for this guilt-free dessert that can also be eaten for breakfast(!).
