Field Trip Tonight: Lights at Lafarge

Location: at the concession in Parking Lot D near the maple leaf gazebo on the north side of the lake. Access from Trevor Wingrove Way, off Pinetree Way, first parking lot on the right. Parking here is free.

Let's enjoy the magic of the Lower Mainland's largest free outdoor light display at Lafarge Lake in Town Centre Park. This year's event features hundreds of thousands of lights wrapping around the lake in multiple themed zones.
We'll wander through the light displays taking opportunities for photos for about an hour and then afterwards we'll meet at Awesome Place Coffee and Dessert, 136-1153 The High Street for coffee, chat and to share photos we've taken.

Christmas Social and Pot-luck!

A big thank you to all our members for making the first have of our 2018/19 season so successful. We had some wonderful speakers and great field trips and are looking forward to more in 2019.
Next Meeting - Dec 11 Christmas Social & Pot Luck
Our last meeting before the Christmas break will be a full one. The eight members whose images were chosen for the Lions Gate Celebration of Nature Contest will tell us about their images and how they were captured. We will also be holding a garage sale. If you have any gear that you aren't using, bring it along to sell! Make sure that you label all your equipment with your name, and how much you would like to get for it. In addition, we want to see some of your favourite seasonal images. Please bring three images with your to share.
- Size your photos 1920 x 1080. Here's a link to an old newsletter with Photo Tips for Sizing Images
- Name your photographs: FirstName_LastName_1; FirstName_LastName_2; FirstName_LastName_3.
- Bring the photos on a thumb drive - remember to name your drive so that it does not get lost.
And of course, we can't forget the "social" part! This meeting will be a pot-luck. Please bring in a goodie to share. An appetizer, something sweet, or some drinks would be wonderful.

Seasons Greetings at TCPC
Meetings are the 2nd and 4th TUESDAYS of the month. We meet in the Drama Room at Port Moody Senior Secondary School, 300 Albert Street, Port Moody, BC. Meetings start at 7:30 PM sharp.
- December 11 – Christmas social and pot-luck. We look forward to seeing you there.
Do you have a friend interested in photography? Invite them to join us for an evening so they can see what we do. We are a very friendly bunch and guests are always welcome!

Winter’s Coming!
SD #43 Night Rental Information
We have received two important emails from the school district giving us information on school availability in instances of extreme weather.
Dress warm!!! In order to conform with the Fortis BC request to use less energy, the school district is planning to turn down the heat in the schools every day at around 4:00 – that means that we will need to dress warmly on these cold winter evenings!
The SD43 home page is the official source of SD43 information during extreme weather conditions and power outages. It is your responsibility to visit www.sd43.bc.ca for the most up to date information. The decision on schools remaining open or closed will occur before 6:30 am of the same day.
CLOSED SCHOOLS – WEEK NIGHTS
If the decision is made to close a school for the day, the evening rental groups will NOT have access. There will be no caretakers on site, no security runners to unlock or lock a site and there will be no snow clearing or salting done at that location.
OPEN SCHOOLS – WEEK NIGHTS
Even if the school remains open, there will be limited snow clearing of parking lots. All snow removal will end by 2:30 pm on any school day. No further action will be taken that day if snow accumulates after plowing.
In the event that the school is open, we will decide mid-afternoon whether to continue with our meeting plans or to cancel. We will post the information on our Facebook Page.
The second email is less likely to concern us, but just so you are aware: SD43 prohibits, and will continue to prohibit, the possession, consumption, production, supply, sale, purchase or attempt to purchase cannabis by anyone in or on school property.

(in case you missed our field trip) encircle the 1.2km Lafarge Lake loop. Nov.24- Jan. 20 from dusk to 11pm.
CP Holiday Train - Link to more info
If you visit the CP Holiday Train and take photos you can enter the Capture the Spirit Photo Contest. You could win a trip for four aboard the 2019 CP Holiday Train as well as $1,000 donation to your local food bank. CP Holiday Train is in Port Moody at 5:20pm and in Port Coquitlam at 7:00 pm on Dec. 18
Carol Ships Parade of Lights - Link to more info
Watch the carol ships at Barnet Marine Park Dec. 14th. A flotilla of carol ships are expected to sail by between 8:00-8:30pm. Times may vary depending on weather.
St. Paul's Hospital Lights of Hope - Link to more info
Over 100,000 light bulbs, spanning a length of more than 10 km sparkle in the night sky. The spectacular display is up Nov.16- Jan.6, 2019 from dusk to dawn.

Summary: of Greg Girard's Presentation

Greg shared his photography with us including images from his early works in Vancouver Street Photography from the 70's & 80's, images from the Kowloon Walled City [one of Hong Kong's most notorious and misunderstood communities] and the early mass development of Shanghai, China in the 90's.
We enjoyed seeing the images and hearing the stories. Greg talked about shooting with film in low light situations: you are often shooting for the highlight details and letting the shadows fall where they fall. The reason for light leaks in old photos is because film was expensive and many photographers were bulk loading their film to reduce the cost. When Greg was telling us about the Kowloon Walled City, he shared his creative vision and process - he wanted to tell a story - all the photos he had seen of the Walled City were in black and white and focused on the crime and despair. He shot it in colour - Greg's photography shows the vibrancy and sense of community and he documented a slice of life in the most densely populated place on the planet: [at the time was at the time] it was nearly 40,000 people squeezed into 350 buildings, 12-14 stories high, packed into a single Hong Kong city block.
