PHOTO OF THE WEEK

A fantastic U8 Indoor tournament held at Polo Farm on Sunday 25th November. See report below. Congratulations to all the teams and the volunteers who made the day such a success.

MATCH REPORTS
U8's Indoor Tournament

After arranging my first tournament I was blown away by how helpful everyone was. Big thank you to you all.

Now onto the tournament :

The tournament consisted of 7 teams; 3 visiting from Tonbridge Wells, Marden, Folkestone and 4 Canterbury teams. All of the Canterbury teams started well with 3 draws and 1 win for Canterbury Dolphins against Marden. The children were soon warmed up and playing really well together, even using the side boards, after just 1 training session.

Next round we had 2 wins for the Canterbury Whales and Turtles plus 1 draw, sadly we lost to Folkestone who were well positioned and passing really well. All the players worked very hard and sometimes played 2 matches in a row. Round 3 we had 2 great wins from the Canterbury Sharks and Turtles plus 2 draws against good teams thanks to some very good defending.

Final round all of our teams drew after some amazing defending again. The winner of the tournament was Folkestone closely followed by our Turtles and Dolphins. Next year we will do our best to win the trophy back!!

I know all the coaches were so proud of how their teams played.

Bring on next year!

Charlottle Lewis
Canterbury U14 girls v Oxted

A strong performance from all the girls today against Oxted. After only a few minutes, the score was 1-0 to Canterbury, as a result of a strong pass from Evie Lewis into Elli Upton, who skilfully slipped the ball into the back of the net. The game continued to stay in the attacking half with lots of lovely passing between all the girls and shots at goal, where their keeper had to make some fine saves.

Lorna Forbes, Eleni Godwin, Irmak Kara and Sophie Wain demonstrated solid performances and good passing in midfield; keeping control of the ball. Amelia Benson, Neave Jeffery-Fox, Darcey Carter and Lucy Gardiner worked well in defence - clearing the ball from off the line into the waiting midfield, where the girls worked hard to intercept the ball and drive down the attacking line. Iona Lester confidently drove the ball into the D and, with a solid hit, made the score 2-0 at half time.

After a quick turn around, the girls started the second half with confidence. Poppy Ladd, from a well executed short corner, smashed the ball into the goal, making it a well deserved 3-0. The second half saw a bit more fight from the opposition, resulting in the girls having to think more about their passing, which Evie, Poppy, Elli, Grace Atkins, Iona and Sophie demonstrated beautifully in the D. Both Iona and Poppy smashed in two more goals.

Final score 5-0 to Canterbury.

A special mention needs to go to Neave, who stepped in from U12s as goalie and although she didn’t see too much of the ball, when she did, played with confidence and skill. Well done girls, lovely display of teamwork and creativity on the pitch.
Fabrizio's player of the match goes to Lorna Forbes.

EH Cup - Canterbury U14 girls vs Marden

In a tight game there were limited chances for both teams. In the first 20 mins we had two good attacks where Rebecca Hutchings made great runs down the right wing although we could not capitalise with connecting shots on goal. Canterbury continued to press and did create a number of short corner opportunities however Marden's runners were swift to close down our striker.

At half time, the score was 0-0 with the Marden goalkeeper making some acrobatic saves to deny our attacking line of Lily Beer, Rose Price and Felicity Ward.

The second half saw Marden start to flood the midfield to try to gain more possession and cut off our passing lines. This created a frustrating period of play with neither side gaining any significant ground.

With 15 minutes to go, there was a well worked triangle of passes from another Canterbury short corner, starting with Elen Nicholls injecting and concluding with Rebecca scoring to make it 1-0 and receiving a big cheer from the small group of home supporters!

Our defensive line then had to hold strong with some great tackling and interceptions from Alice Hellyar, Beth Langdale and Emma Panayides to cut out Marden's routes to goal.

The final result was a tough, ground out 1-0 win.

Fabrizio's player of the match was Rebecca Hutchings.

A MESSAGE FROM JOHN MAYLAM,
PRESIDENT OF THE MENS CLUB

President’s Day and The Gambia

Straight after President’s Day I disappeared out to The Gambia and did not get a chance to thank everyone for their help in setting up and making the event a really special occasion.  I did appreciate your contribution.

The juniors kicked off the day with an excellent intra club tournament, brilliantly run, and the whole competition was a credit to the club.  The day brought many old friends back together again and it gave us an excellent chance to entertain our many sponsors, and we are very grateful for their continued support.

On the day a raffle was run to support a charity run by Kaira Konko Scouts at Soma in The Gambia, and we thank those who provided prizes, and those that bought tickets.  £500 was raised. Kaira Konko is a scout centre in Soma and was built by Hampshire scouts in 1989 led by an amazing woman called Marion Christmas, who led our party out there this year. I was introduced to this project by some hampshire hockey friends and this was my first visit to the area.

The centre has one full time project director, who is responsible for overseeing the centre (which is now self-funding, as you can stay there on a full board basis), and also all the outreach projects.   We ended up painting a block of two classrooms inside and out, and building four block containers for burning all the rubbish accumulated at the school, with the help of several very enthusiastic local Gambian scouts! Our granddaughter, who came with us on the trip, has purchased a postnatal bed in the local outreach hospital, with funds that she had raised.  There was only one other bed!

My wife, Sally, and I took the money raised on Sunday directly to Soma in The Gambia, where it has helped to feed 150 children in a remote school for a term.  Other term’s being sponsored by fellow volunteers.  These children had not received school lunches for several months.   The remainder of the money went towards funding an IT course for a lovely teenager.

Can you help with the following:-
Pre-loved Laptops
Does anyone have an old laptop they no longer use and would be prepared to donate it as we have some other teenagers we are sponsoring to put through the IT Course and they desperately need their own laptops to help with their progress.  If you have, please let me know and I can arrange for them to be cleaned before having them out.

Old scanner/copier
Has anyone got an old scanner/copier, compatible to MO 2010 or Windows XP?  Again this would be of great help.

If you have either a laptop or scanner,  or you wish to know more about the projects that Kaira Konk are funding  in the community, please email me at;  jcm.maylam@gmail.com
