Hello and Happy (early) Christmassy Friday

A couple of talking points from Facebook and the podcast this week.

As always, if so inspired, do let me know your thoughts.

Create a Clearing

When I shared this image on Facebook this week, it opened up a typical dialogue which I frequently have with some clients.

My correspondent said that this explained why she needs to work out what her purpose actually is.

I replied with what I believe about finding your life's purpose. You don't. It finds you. It has already found you, you just haven't noticed yet.

There is a school of thought I like very much that at least to some extent you are already living your life's purpose. Clues are often what you love, what people rely on you for or consult you about just naturally. I asked her if that brought anything to mind, something which is easy, natural and joyful.

I explained that I had seen Michael Neill and Robert Holden demonstrate this on stage at an event in London a few years back. Many readers will remember that a friend in our group was called up on stage; you may even have been with us? This was further complicated by the fact that they were calling her by one name when she was someone else entirely because she had picked up a ticket when one of our pals was called away urgently and couldn't attend. But we sorted that one out, she wasn't an imposter!

Michael and Robert asked how they could help and she said she wanted some direction about finding her life's purpose. They looked confused and explained that you don’t find it, it has already found you but you haven’t realised, accepted, acknowledged your gifts and talents. Look inside. It’s there waiting for you.

I offered this to my FB correspondent and she replied:

"I have gone over everything so many times in my head and I'm still unable to see it. I've tried meditating, affirmations, books ad nauseam but no joy. I seem to have lost interest in all the things I thought I loved. It seems to me that everything comes back to not having sufficient funds and too many work and family obligations to allow for any real change. But that being said - it feels like I'm playing a broken record and my inner needle has made a trench out of what used to be a small groove."

Oh God! Who hasn't been there??

My recommendations are to release scarcity around lack of time and money. Do all you can with what you have to change that. Make that a major focus of your personal development/spiritual work on yourself. As those things leave you over time, all will be revealed. They are blocking the view. And that if you keep chipping away at that, it will work. It will change things. It will reveal.

She told me she agreed with me. It has taken well over a year and a half but she's slowly coming round and that at least now she can see she's making headway. She added that she'd recently woken up from a very lucid dream to the realisation that meaning isn't something she has to find but something she can give.

She described that as an interesting shift, which it is. I thanked her for illustrating my point perfectly.

Do you know your life's purpose? If not, I am about to share something with you that MIGHT help.

PS It isn't in your head.

PPS After I finished this newsletter today, Tuesday, I nipped off to do my poetry handwriting practice. Thank you to Anne Reynolds for sharing this, so good I had to nip back in and include it here.

Do not try to save
the whole world
or do anything grandiose.
Instead, create
a clearing
in the dense forest
of your life
and wait there
patiently,
until the song
that is your life
falls into your own cupped hands
and you recognize and greet it.
Only then will you know
how to give yourself
to this world
so worth of rescue.

What's Your Sparketype?

I'll set the scene. It's Friday afternoon, it's about 4.30. Time for a little Facebook fun with yet another profile quiz.

I shared my results, reminding everyone that I don't set much store generally by profiling systems (because I think I know who I am already) but that this one was spot on.

I'm going to share some highlights so you can see how spot on it is. And then talk a bit about what, if any, value there might be in this one for you, and give you a link to take it for free. It comes from a good source: Jonathan Fields and The Good Life Project. He's written many good books. One I found especially valuable is called Uncertainty: Turning Fear and Doubt into Fuel for Brilliance.

My Primary Sparketype is The Advisor

"As an Advisor, coaching, mentoring and advising is your call. You light up like nothing else when you play the role of the trusted advisor. The person who swoops in, develops sustained, personal, relationships, most often with individuals or small groups, cultivates trust and confidence and creates the safety needed to coach or guide people, in a hands-on, engaging way toward a desired end.

While you see yourself as someone who is wise and skilled, it's less about teaching a particular body of knowledge and more about the interactive process of guiding people, in a more personalized way, through a process of growth, problem-solving, application and achievement. Your true aspiration is not just to get them to the place they yearn to be, but to also help them develop their own inner-trust and self-reliance, so that, when the time is right, you can step away, watch them soar and engage with others who await a similar "intervention."

Because of this, you can often walk into nearly any setting, industry or field and fairly quickly feel at home, even if you don't have deep domain-specific expertise. You just know your ability to apply your unique lens, focused awareness, and skills as an advisor and mentor are robust enough to give anyone what they need in nearly any endeavour."

Let me say first that there is nothing new in here I didn't already know, but I have never seen it expressed so well. It is such a good description of what I do and who I am it may eventually end up on my website! That middle paragraph explains why I want to talk to each client individually because you are each fascinating and unique, and why I have never created a signature program because it is an interactive process. And also it explains my book which was all about helping clients to develop their own inner trust and self-reliance.

My Shadow Sparketype is The Maven

"Your Shadow Sparketype is The Maven, which means you latch onto a topic, field or industry and devour everything you can know about it. Staying "surface level" just isn't an option for you. It's no fun. You are driven to learn, to discover, to ferret out information, wisdom and knowledge. But, for you, when you're really being honest, that drive is almost always in service of doing the work of your Primary Sparketype at the higher possible level. It's more a means than an end."

I am driven to learn, discover and ferret out information, wisdom and knowledge in service of my work with my clients. Yep. I knew that too.

What then is the value of this knowledge for me?

It reassures.

I knew I was on the right path. I knew I was living my life's purpose but that doesn't mean it is easy. Knowing might be half the battle, see above, but it is useful to have a little reminder that I am doing what I was born to do. And loving it, even when it is tough.

What then is the point of taking tests like this and the value of the results to you?

Most who joined in were not surprised by their results. Some were reassured, others confused. Some were surprised that it worked so well, and one said that the questions were interesting that the exercise wasn't glib (I did say it came from a good source). Some shared that they found other profiling systems more appropriate to them. Others just wanted to share their results, for the craic. Others were able to help each other by explaining the value they found in the same profile results.

We discussed whether or not we were going to spend money to get a deeper report. I'm not. I even opted out of their marketing emails after two or three days, not because they weren't doing a good job, they were, but I know I am not in the market for any more information that doesn't come from my own inner wisdom.

It was a conversation starter, I had a nice long FB Messenger chat with a pal who now lives abroad and wanted to explore what was in it for her. It got her thinking, she said. And quite quickly too, while she was waiting for me to put my contact lenses in, my shoes on and make coffee and meet her on my laptop, about ten minutes in total.

Before talking to her I shared that I didn't think any changes were required in her life and work as she seemed pretty successful and content to me. Our conversation was useful to us both since we share the Maven profile, her primary, my secondary, and we realised that although we could create and share information which we simplify for people, neither of us wants any more sitting down work. We pondered aloud how we could "write" while going for a walk! We enjoyed a meeting of minds and got up to date with each other's news and we discussed the meaning of life. And #Strictly.

Of course, I leapt at the chance to get onto a live chat with her where we could discuss it because this is my primary Sparketype! I would do that whether or not anyone paid me for it. Can't help myself. It's just who I am. It's just my life's purpose and I am living it.

You can take the FREE test here.

By all means write to let me know your results and how they have helped or further confused, or share them on our discussion here.

I Always Have an Hour for You

On the podcast each week Nicola and I ask each other what's fuelled our fire. Sometimes it is difficult to come up with something. This week I was able to share that a client I love working with paid for a year in advance and did it faster than she said she would so it showed up surprisingly in my November accounts.

In a roundabout way, I was telling another client this and she asked why I’d done that, committed to another year with a client, since she knows I am half anticipating a sabbatical in 2019 and the answer came to me in a flash, there are just some people I will always be happy to find an hour for.

Time spent with some clients is perceived to be more valuable to both parties but honestly… you can’t tell.

Some are vocal about the benefits and how and why we love working together, and others may derive just as much benefit - or more - but be too shy or never think to say.

If you would value a conversation about your life's purpose or your Sparketype, I always have an hour for you. The first one's free or you can PWYW. If you want to do that during December and, let's face it, it is a corking time of year for this sort of navel-gazing, simply reply to this email or use the contact form on my website.

Until next time...

Judith
