D1.jobs: New opportunity below at Purdue. Post your team openings in the most-read daily publication in college athletics. Learn more here.
Jon Gilbert: New ECU AD Gilbert officially introduced in Greenville. Gets a five-year deal worth $500K annually. Chancellor Staton: "During the search process, Jon stood out as a great fit for the proud traditions we have at ECU and for the vision we have for this program. I was especially impressed with Jon's commitment to the academic and athletic goals for our student-athletes." Special Advisor Hart: "Jon Gilbert is a terrific person and outstanding administrator. He understands that how you treat people matters. ECU Athletics is in the hands of a very strong leader who will immediately embrace the Pirate Nation." (link, link, link); Interestingly, 247's Igoe reports Hart will be sticking around. Details TBD. (link); Here's a look from inside the BoT meeting as Gilbert was confirmed as the choice. (link); Southern Miss Prez Bennett: "In the coming days, I expect to name an interim Director of Athletics and will move as quickly as possible to identify a permanent replacement. […] My expectation is that our next Director of Athletics will be a capable leader who will focus on the development of our student-athletes, energize our fan base, and engage our community and supporters." (link)
Latest SBJ: Headliners Smith & Ourand go in on potential conference realignment as a juicy lead in to this week's Learfield Intercollegiate Athletics Forum in New York City. Starting point: The Big Ten, Pac-12 & Big 12 all have major TV rights deals up for grabs between 2022 & 2024, which could get things rolling. Dominoes: What if Texas goes out on its own? What if the Longhorns head to the Big Ten or ACC, the latter of which already has deep roots with an ESPN-tied network, just like UT's Longhorn version. One TV executive, "My sense is that nobody wants to upset the applecart this time around." Another: "There’s a lot less in play this time. How many viable candidates are there? At some point, conferences will look at expansion as producing diminishing returns. The idea that conferences would continue to expand to absurd levels tied to athletics? That ends at some point." More. (link); Smith inks on "winners" from the last round of realignment: Utah & TCU, the ACC, Chris Del Conte's moves, Texas & Oklahoma, the Big East. (link); As for losers: The Big Ten, Rutgers, UConn, traditional matchups & West Virginia's travel budget. (link); Not from SBJ, but along the same lines from The Athletic's Notre Dame beat writer Sampson, "I’ve long argued that Notre Dame would lose money by joining a conference, but the loss would come in donations. When independence is your culture - athletic and institutional - and you’re raising $700 million per year in development, you don’t sweat $10 million in media rights." (link); The three SBJ links do not require a user/pass thanks to synergy with Learfield, SBJ & D1.ticker.
Remember the lawsuit former Ohio State FB student-athlete & TV analyst Spielman brought against OSU, IMG, Nike & Honda? The Buckeyes & Spielman have settled to the tune of $140K with Spielman donating the sum to the William White Family Fund for ALS and the Stephanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research. Spielman's agent, "Our full efforts can now be focused upon the primary defendant IMG." (link)
Kansas' FY18 results were $5M+ in the red, the second straight campaign the Jayhawks saw a deficit. Notable: "Athletic department spending for the fiscal year that ended June 30 totaled a little more than $110 million, up about 9.5 percent from last year’s spending. Revenues, however, totaled about $105 million and grew at a rate of about 5 percent." Overall ticket sales rose 4% to $20.5M, general contributions +17% to $21.5M, sponsorship & royalty payments grew to $16.5M from $11.8M, salaries totaled $40.8M up from $36.1M, KU ended up with $9.4M in its primary bank account, $30.2M overall in cash. More. (link)
Speaking of cash, South Carolina has generated $28M for an initial need of $30M in its latest facilities upgrade push, but the Gamecocks are now stretching the goal to $40M. The additional $10M will go toward enhancements to Williams-Brice Stadium, "A $750,000 project to renovate the first floor of the Floyd Building on the north side of the stadium is projected to be completed in time for the 2019 season. A $21 million project that will add premium areas to the south, east and west sides of the stadium is expected to be completed in time for the 2020 season." (link)
One more note on the money train as Arkansas has received a $5M commitment from Willard & Pat Walker Foundation for the new Baseball Performance Center at Baum Stadium. Total cost for the new digs targeted at $20M to $25M. Hogs AD Yurachek: "This new Baseball Performance Center is another tool that will be integral in our pursuit of College World Series Championships. We appreciate the Willard & Pat Walker Foundation for providing the lead gift to enable us to move forward with this important investment into the success of our baseball program." (link)
Another recap video from this year's LEAD1 Annual meeting, this one focused on AD responses to the biggest challenges faced around the industry. Fresno State's Tumey points to student-athlete well-being, Utah State AD Hartwell, "It all comes down to dollars and cents," Penn State's Barbour points to the "number of stakeholders that we serve is probably the root of all of our challenges." More as North Texas' Baker mentions sports gambling, on-going litigation & pay-for-play issues. (link)
Florida AD Stricklin reiterates he would have had no problem facing UCF in a bowl game. The Orlando Sentinel's Bianchi points blame at the CFP committee as they, presumably, didn't want to put the Knights in the same bowl as last year. (link); Some FB HCs don't like late night kicks, but what about ones that go live before Noon local time? Count North Dakota State HC Klieman as a fan with the Bison's coming 11a start this Saturday for an FCS Playoffs quarterfinal against Colgate. Klieman points to national ESPN exposure benefits, "I think it’s a big deal for the out-of-region recruits that we’re continuing to work on and continuing to talk to that maybe for whatever reason are at a place that don’t have ESPN-plus or ESPN3. Those guys are able to watch it. I think anytime you get that exposure out there on the major networks it’s a definite plus in recruiting." (link)
presented by Anthony Travel
Maryland AD Evans adds university Director of Communications Jennings as Senior Assoc. AD/Chief Communications Officer. Jennings arrived in College Park last year after a deep background in politics. Evans: "Jessica is a forward-thinking communications professional whose leadership and experience in the field will be invaluable to our organization moving forward. I am excited for what Jessica's unique background across an array of platforms and on the university's main campus will bring to our department as we execute our vision for One Maryland." (link)
The second week of the NCAA's NET ratings shows more power brands in the Top 20. Matter of fact, there's only four non-P5 programs now in the Top 20: Gonzaga at 2, Nevada at 10, Buffalo at 13 & Utah State at 17. CBSSports.com's Norlander: "Look how much things have changed after a mere seven days worth of data—then consider how this could flesh out by the time we get to January, let alone March." ESPN's Borzello's response, "...because they (the NCAA) didn’t wait the extra week or two to release it, it totally busted during its big reveal. People have viewed it as a punchline the last week. As a result, I wonder how long it will take for people to seriously come around to it." (linklink)
It's That Time of Year: Louisville AD Tyra looks to be getting off the recruiting trail with the hire of Appalachian State's Satterfield. (link); UMass AD Bamford pops for Florida State OC Bell with a 5-year deal worth $625K annually. (link); Liberty AD McCaw is on the clock as HC Gill retires. (link); New Central Michigan HC McElwain's deal is 5x$640K. (link); Brown AD Hayes turns to Bryant's Perry. (link); New ECU HC Houston gets a five-year deal that starts at $1.3M in Y1, $1.468M in Y3, $1.671M in Y5. $20K bonus for any wins over P5 programs, 8-win season = $30K, each one after = $5K more. (link); Cool feature from FootballScoop as they're keeping track of full new staff hires. (link)
North Texas FB HC Littrell is in New York City for this week's festivities, so Mean Green AD Baker stood in to discuss UNT's post-season bid to the New Mexico Bowl. Baker on retaining Littrell, "I am bullish on our potential to keep coach Littrell. I also have a comfort in knowing because of his efforts and the efforts of his coaches, our student-athletes, administration and staff, we have a situation here that would be highly attractive to a lot of candidates. I believe we will continue to be successful." More: "We have invested as fans and as a campus to where this is a great football job, one of the best in the Group of Five, one of if not the best in our conference and one of if not the best in Texas, which is a great place to live and recruit." (link)
The San Jose Mercury News' Wilner takes a look at FB conference championship game attendance & TV ratings. Here's the breakdown: ACC (67,784 / not available), Big Ten (66,375 / down 30%), Big 12 (83,114 / 6.8), Pac-12 (35,134 / 3.1), SEC (77,141 / 10.5). Wilner notes the Pac-12 has at least one more year in its deal with Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, where it might go after that (campus site? Vegas?) is a big question. (link)
USA Today's Wolken asks if the College Football Playoff is "getting stale" with Alabama, Clemson & Oklahoma eating up so many spots year after year. In total, 20 spots in the history of the arrangement have gone to just 10 schools. Thesis: "...if the primary argument against the old BCS was that it didn’t give enough teams a fair shot to compete for a national championship, the Playoff has actually seemed to narrow the field rather than expand it. […] Make no mistake, the current Playoff has been an improvement for college football. But after seeing the same teams pop up year after year in the four-team format, it soon will need to offer something new." (link); The AP's Russo on the same topic & if it were an eight-team arrangement, "The arguments about whether Georgia or Michigan should get the final wild-card spot would have been more than enough to carry several hours of programming. Sure, it would still likely be Alabama and Clemson in the end, but television executives will tell you that once fans become engaged with a playoff they are more likely to stick around after their teams are out. It is one of the reasons the NCAA basketball tournament is such a long-running hit." (link)
One key initiative for Boston College AD Jarmond is building a support system among first-generation student-athletes, which starts with a beginning of the school year meet & greet. Jarmond: "It’s important that they know that they’re not alone, because it can be isolating, but also too that there are so many resources on campus and that we’re here to help them not only thrive, but really succeed and start something in their family that can last for generations." The event also brought in faculty & on-campus resources & Jarmond emphasizes the importance of continually reminding first-generation student-athletes the university "has their back." As a byproduct, the first generation student-athlete club was created & Jarmond further notes, "It’s very important, the lasting legacy and impact that these students can have when they graduate, setting an example for those coming behind them—you can’t place a value on that." (link)
UTEP AD Senter, who has led the Miners for a year now, takes a look back. Senter points to big lifts of hiring new FB & MBB HCs, ready to keep moving, "I’m starting to have a little bit more comfort in terms of what do I think works. What do I want to do? What kind of changes might we make? What have I learned from my first 12 months on the job? It’s a very, very fluid dynamic and a very educational experience." Compete for & win championships is still at the forefront, "I think our fan base has become somewhat apathetic because we haven’t been winning. It’s going to take a lot more energy and a lot more effort to try to get our folks invigorated to the point where they want to buy tickets, they want to be a donor and they want to come to games… There’s a certain level of apathy that is going to take them a gargantuan effort to get it  jump started again and get people to get back on board and help us." (link)
Pacific will officially discontinue its Field Hockey program at the end of next June in a budget conscious decision. Tigers AD Lucas points to an overall department budget that was $4M upside down in 2017 & needs to be "trimmed" by 12%. Lucas reassures there's no other plans to cut sports, some student-athletes say they're going to dig in to see if the program can be saved. (link)
Interesting read on Michigan Digital Strategy & Creative Lead Wagner's use of Facebook advertising to reach a significant portion of 20K alumni who had the capacity to give using a basic ad campaign. Details per Wagner: "Spending $500 in the final week of December, the University of Michigan athletic department reached 9,029 of the 15,000 targeted users. Intrigued by the ad, 199 people clicked the link and eventually 40 donated a whopping $17,392. The 56-percent result rate and $2.51 cost per result were well worth the initial $500 investment." ROI: 34.78 to 1. (link)
Saint Joseph's adds an "autism break room" inside Hagan Arena for "people who want to escape the blare and spectacle typically associated with college and pro sports." Hawks AD Bodensteiner: "Basketball is here to build community. And we can’t build community unless we’re open and accessible to all." (link); Tennessee is installing Field Turf at Baseball's Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The overhaul has already begun & will be plenty ready for opening day in February. (link)
Also Noticed: For this year's Army v. Navy matchup, Army West Point will wear "Big Red One" unis, designed to commemorate the "100th anniversary of America's First Division helping end the first Great War of the 20th century." Check out this video revealing the look. A photo gallery of Navy's previously revealed throwbacks is also included. (link); American Men's Soccer HC West will not be back for a 20th season. (link); The headline: "NCAA Says Athletes' Antitrust Closings 'Smuggle In' Evidence" and the intro "The National Collegiate Athletic Association has slammed the closing arguments of student-athletes in a fight over compensation, telling a California federal judge the players relied on expert witnesses to 'smuggle in'..." really makes you wonder what is behind the Law360 paywall. Maybe USA Today's Berkowitz will have more today. (link); Former Georgia equipment manager Purvis has been indicted for allegedly spying on men in the shower at Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall. He is charged with invasion of privacy, possession of eavesdropping devices, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. (link); A 7.0 earthquake on Friday has Alaska Airlines Arena and Wells Fargo Sports Complex on the Alaska Anchorage campus closed until at least today. A sprinkler system broke in the AAC, leaving standing water on the floor. (link); Once again, Netflix Content Chief Sarandos doesn't think adding sports enhances Netflix's "on-demand" strategy, but "If it becomes the next best place to spend $10 billion dollars, I would look at it. .. I don't think that is the case for today." (link); Latest streaming fail: DirecTV Now users experienced outages during the MAC and Pac-12 FB championship games last week. (link); DAZN expands once again. This time its in Brazil with key international soccer rights. (link)
