Potential for Winter Weather and Being Prepared

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for much of western and central NC. Winter precipitation is expected to begin in western NC Saturday morning and move eastward throughout the day, reaching central and eastern counties by Saturday evening. The heaviest precipitation is expected to be on Sunday.

During winter storms, travel can become very hazardous. Heavy precipitation of snow or ice can caused downed trees or power outages. Prepare for the effects of winter weather by preparing your family's emergency kit (see kit recommendations below) and having a plan in case the power goes out.  Please be sure your emergency plans include pets.

In addition, there are a number of online resources for storm news that is provided by the state of North Carolina. They include:

New Name Reflects Agency's Mission to Prevent Violence

Davie Domestic Violence Services and Rape Crisis Center is now Davie Center for Violence Prevention. The new name and logo continues to reflect the agency’s mission to end domestic violence and sexual assault through crisis intervention, advocacy, resources, education, and support services.

The center and its staff seek to reduce the incidence of family violence in Davie County through early and appropriate intervention and direct services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The services provided to victims and their family members include: crisis intervention, advocacy, accompaniment to court and/or the magistrate’s office, assistance with filing legal documents (e.g. 50-B, motions), referrals to law enforcement agencies, counseling, local community resources, coordination of emergency shelter, and a 24 hour crisis intervention and victim assistance hotline.

“We want our new name and logo to more accurately reflect the mission. The new name
is more welcoming and supportive, and speaks to our renewed commitment to prevent violence in our community by offering core services in Crisis Intervention, Advocacy, Resources, Education, and Support Services,” said Lisa Ivester, Director of the Center.

Davie County One of 22 Health Departments to Receive Grant Funding

The Davie County Health and Human Services Department is one of 22 local health departments in North Carolina to receive a share of a $1.8 million grant  to implement high-impact, community-level strategies to address the opioid crisis based on the NC Opioid Action Plan.

The one-time grants of up to $100,000 encourage local health departments and districts to partner with local agencies and community-based organizations to implement strategies such as syringe exchange programs, connection of justice-involved persons to treatment and recovery services and post-overdose response teams with emergency medical services. Thirty-four local health departments across the state applied for the funding.

This grant funding (specifically for Davie County), will establish a Case Manager who will be dedicated to court-involved individuals, a population that is highly vulnerable to relapse and overdose, in developing the tools and support to combat opioid abuse and dependence.  The Davie County Sheriff's Office will work in collaboration with the Health and Human Services Department, along with other community partners, to offer comprehensive case management to support individuals awaiting trial or currently in detention.  The establishment of a dedicated Case Manager to work closely with these individuals who agree and commit to case management services, will enable the county to offer a program that provides effective treatment care and monitoring.
