As we celebrate the holidays with friends and family, we are reminded of how thankful we at TxOHC are of our partners.  It is with your support we have had a successful 2018, it is you who make our accomplishments possible.

REPORT ON PROGRESS TOWARD THE
2018 MILESTONES

On behalf of the Oral Health Progress and Equity Network (OPEN), we are pleased to share with you a report on our goals and targets, which describes progress toward 2018 milestones, along with an Executive Summary of the findings. These materials reflect the most comprehensive assessment of national oral health improvement conducted to date and reveal exciting strides toward improving and achieving equitable oral health across the lifespan.

We celebrate that OPEN has either achieved or is on its way to 26 of its 36 milestones, with particular progress made under targets for Medicaid, person-centered care, and public perception. This is a true testament to the power of OPEN to advance change and equitable health nationwide. It is also a signal that while many of our strategies are working, there is still much work to be done.

In the coming months, leaders of OPEN will be shepherding efforts to: (1) further collect and synthesize feedback to these findings; and (2) informed by that knowledge, plot our strategic course through 2020 so that we can achieve all of our goals. We look forward to sharing those recommendations with you and engaging with you on the road ahead.

New Federal Report:
Reforming America’s Healthcare System Through Choice and Competition

The U.S. Department of  Health and Human Services (HHS), Department of  the Treasury and Department of Labor have recently collaborated to develop the report entitled, "Reforming America’s Healthcare System Through Choice and Competition."

The report identifies challenges to and recommendations for improving the health care system in the United States and describes the influence of state and federal laws, regulations, guidance, and policies on choice and competition in health care markets. Issues addressed include scope of practice, workforce mobility, and telehealth.

In the report, HHS recommends that legislators repeal unnecessary mandates and allow for the sale of affordable, less-comprehensive insurance plans such as association health plans, short-term, limited-duration plans, or catastrophic plans.
Other suggestions include
allowing non-physicians (nurse practitioners and physician assistants) and non-dentist providers (hygienists and dental therapists) to independently treat patients,  reforming scope-of-practice statutes and increasing the use of telemedicine.

NEW RESOURCE FOR DENTAL PROFESSIONALS ON TOBACCO & ORAL HEALTH

The Campaign for Dental Health and the Julius B. Richmond Center of Excellence of the American Academy of Pediatrics have created a new resource, Addressing Tobacco in Dental Settings: A Resource for Dental Professionals, with a corresponding resource for families, How to Avoid Harmful Tobacco Products.

Smoking, use of smokeless tobacco products, and exposure to secondhand smoke all have significant impacts on oral health. Tobacco users are at higher risk of oral cancers, periodontal disease, and tooth loss. Children exposed to tobacco smoke have higher rates of dental caries. Dental professionals play a critically important role, as the dental visit is an important opportunity to screen for tobacco use and exposure and deliver a consistent message about cessation and protecting children and families from tobacco exposure. Access and share these resources with your colleagues in the dental community today.
