Our Main Sponsor This Month:
HOLIDAY PANCAKE BREAKFAST
Sunday, December 9th, 9-11am

A message from Councillor Tim Tierney

With the Christmas holidays upon us, I wanted to take the opportunity to have you all come out for a pancake and sausage breakfast at Colonel By Secondary School. We will be hosting you in their Cafetorium, with cooking done by Enbridge. We will also be collecting donations (food and cash) to give to the Gloucester Emergency Food Cupboard as the holidays are always a busy time, and I would love nothing more than to be able to help others have a warm and festive holiday season.

Please mark Sunday, December 9th from 9:00am-11:00am in your calendars as the date of the event. I look forward to seeing you there!

The BHCA Newsletter is written by members of the board. Jeff Kaluski, the BHCA president, wrote it solo for years. For the past few months Josée Lindsay has helped contribute some content (and make it prettier). We are fortunate to have David Handelman join as a regular contributor to the Green Corner, bringing you great tips to make a more environmental home and community.

Did you know you can also contribute to the monthly newsletter?

We would love to get interesting content from you, the members of our community. It could be a one-time small piece about anything interesting in Beacon Hill. It could be a picture of the hood back in the day with a caption of where it is. It could be about an event that you know of or anything else that would be of interest to your neighbours.
The content will be reviewed by one of our members and if approved will appear in the Newsletter as well as the FB group page.

Please submit the article via this link: https://www.bhca.ca/submit/
GREEN CORNER

EASY tips for a greener holiday season:

Make your own wrapping paper out of the comic section of an old newspaper or perhaps old flyers. Re-use gift bags you've received or skip wrapping all together.

Buy local foods, wine and spirits for your holiday feasts.

Consider purchasing gifts that are locally sourced, or perhaps even consider gifts you can purchase from other people, like off of sites like ebay or kijiji. Experiential gifts may be even better. You'll spend time with the people you care about and no manufacturing or waste is required.

Responsibly deal with old items that have been replaced by the gifts you receive. Consider donating or selling old cell phones or other electronics, or ensure they get disposed of responaibly in e-waste collection locations.

Traveling somewhere? Consider offsetting the emissions created by your travel on sites like: www.terrapass.comwww.carbonfund.org or www.carbonify.com
The BHCA would like to wish you a very happy holiday season!

We hope you have a wonderful holiday season with friends and family. It's the time of year for giving but also a time to be thankful for all that we have. Speaking of gratitude...

Thank you to all that came out to the BHCA events in 2018. Thank you to all the volunteers that have helped us coordinate, plan and deliver awesome events.
And thank you to you, all the neighbours in Beacon Hill. We are very lucky to live in a such a great neighbourhood, with great people and look forward to an even bigger and better year in 2019.

Rink Operator needed for JASMINE rink!

The City of Ottawa hasn't been able to locate an operator for the building and maintenance of the ice at the Jasmine Outdoor Rink. They have asked the BHCA to send out a request in search of someone to take on the ice building duties.

The position comes with a stipend of $2379. Although the work is heavily front loaded, the back end is quite light. If you, friend(s), your local sports team, local group, or neighbour would be interested, please reply to this email and we at the BHCA will put you in contact with the appropriate people at the City to provide the community with a skating rink on Jasmine crescent.

Rink Supervisors Needed!

Are you 15+ years old?

Would you like to earn your volunteer hours by playing hockey or skating?
OR
Would you like to get a $10/hour stipend as a thank you for volunteering?

If you answered 'Yes' to either question...WE NEED YOU. You will be responsible for unlocking the skate shack, counting the skaters, and locking up afterwards (a few other small things, but that's the bulk of it). That whole time you can skate or play hockey, ringette, whatever.

Please fill in this quick form to let us know if you'd like to help!

Get involved!
Board members needed!

The BHCA is looking for a new board member to fill the Seniors Community chair, Community Outreach, Rinks Manager (in charge of all 3 rinks) and other volunteer roles. These roles would help the BHCA make connections with local, great businesses in the community, attend Ecological meetings with the city, or just help us out in general.

Just hit 'Reply' to this newsletter and let us know what you'd like to do, or if you aren't sure, just let us know and we can figure out a good role that you'll enjoy.

Please come join the BHCA Facebook group page.

The Facebook page was created by the Beacon Hill Community Association to contribute to the sense of community in our hood and provide another tool to connect with fellow neighbours. It's a place where we can share news about our community such as upcoming events, awesomeness currently going on or information that would be helpful to residents in the neighbourhood. It is not meant to be a place to advertise a business or to sell things. Your cooperation would be much appreciated.

December 9th: Pancake Breakfast at Colonel By High School
Cars and winter don't really go well together. There area few things you can do to make the snowy driving season easier on everyone:
  • Brush off your entire car before driving
  • Winter tires are soooooo worth it
  • Slow down in slippery conditions
  • Remember there are lanes even when there's snow
  • Park as close to the next car as you would in the summer
  • Slow down when pedestrians walk on the road
  • (not winter specific) Use the zipper merge at onramps
Everyone is trying to get somewhere, and with a bit of tolerance, we can all get there.
