Weekly Update

DEAR McCALL FAMILY,

Last Tuesday, PayPal and Facebook announced a #GivingTuesday match program. The McCall school community united and raised $1,425 for our school in a little over 24 hours! While Facebook or PayPal Giving Fund did not match the donations to our school, please know that you all helped raised critically needed funds for our school. McCall faculty, staff, and the principal all appreciate your generous support! 

If you would like to support our school, and prefer to give online, we have great news: McCall Home & School Association is now a registered charity with PayPal Giving Fund! If you wish to make an online donation to our school, you can do so via PayPal Giving Fund by at http://bit.ly/DonatetoMcCallSchool. PayPal Giving Fund will cover all fees, send you a tax receipt via email, and send the funds to McCall HSA within 15-45 days. Please send us a note about your gift to our treasurer Cari Akula treasurer@mccallschool.org so we can acknowledge your contribution in our upcoming Annual Report. Donations of $500 or more will be honored with an inscribed leaf on the tree, outside of the McCall school auditorium.

Since July, we have received numerous requests for critical school needs. These are the larger initiatives which require funding: 

• funding EducationWorks through 2019-2020;
• building a STEM lab;
• fulfilling technology needs such as new SMART Boards for the Library and for ESOL students;
• continuing to replenish or update instructional materials, including books and software; 
• tackling capital improvements;

• Stay tuned for info on how you can volunteer to support McCall Drama Club's production of "Annie." The HSA raises funds for our school by selling concessions, tees, and tickets. If you would like to help in that capacity, please let Peggy Banaszek know at VicePresident@McCallSchool.org
• The McCall Gala is our biggest fundraiser of the school year. The next McCall Gala which will take place on Friday, May 17, 2019 at Reading Terminal Market. If you are interested in volunteering, please attend our December 13 HSA meeting at Starr Garden, or reach out to Anna (President@McCallSchool.org) or Peggy VicePresident@McCallSchool.org.  Thank you!

As a reminder, on Wednesday, December 5th from 3:30-5 PM, McCall music teacher Ms. Julia Lee and MacGuffin Theatre Artistic Director Mr. John Rea will offer an "Annie" audition preparation workshop, where students will sing their piece of the score and learn a dance from the show for the dance audition. Students who can’t attend the December 5 workshop can request a copy of their piece of the score for the audition. In the meantime, here are the audition songs:

On Friday, December 7, McCall technology teacher Ms. Katherine Smith will host the first-ever McCall Code-A-Thon! Per Ms. Smith: "During the Code-A-Thon, students are presented with coding challenges which they will have the opportunity to research, plan and create a finished product. The projects are then judged on their adherence to the required components and the creative execution of the idea. Please be assured that not all judges are computer programmers. One of the goals of the competition is to include people of different professions as coding is quickly becoming an integral part of education and occupational preparedness." Due to space constraints in the school auditorium, this event is not open to the public or families. Please follow #PhillyCodes and #CSedWeek hashtags on social media for live updates throughout the week! If you would like to see this coding education expanded, please consider purchasing mini robots from Ms. Smith's Amazon Wishlist: CLICK HERE. The purpose of this technology is to teach the students coding, computational thinking, communication and design thinking skills.

We also want to give a special shoutout to McCall parent Sonia Benner, who has donated a performance of "The Brave Little Tailor" by Enchantment Theatre. The performance will take place next Tuesday, December 11 at 9 AM. We are grateful to Sonia and to Enchantment Theatre, and to our school for bringing joy, wonder, and language arts to our students!
