1. Executive Summary

We have attached a link to the agenda below for this weeks CVO meeting if you would like to read through it.
2. The Purpose of this email is to inform you of what is going on and to ask questions.

Some of the items in the CVO meeting agenda this week are:

1.   Reducing the number of veterinarians on council so non-veterinarians would out number them:
Page 80 in agenda below,
The proposed Council composition is as follows:
• 10 -12 veterinarians;
• 7-9 public appointments;
• 2-4 veterinary technicians;
• 1 academic appointment from the Ontario Veterinary College (veterinarian on faculty);
and
• 1 academic appointment from a veterinary technician program (veterinary technologist on faculty).

2.    Eliminating elections and just having appointments:

Background
The Legislative Reform Implementation Advisory Group, as part of its overall mandate, has discussed the issue of whether to select or elect members of Council from the veterinary profession.
Discussion
The following briefing note has been developed to assist Council in its discussion on whether to continue to support an election model or to move to a selection process for members of Council from the veterinary profession under a new legislative format.
Options
Council is now asked to review the following briefing note and to either:
1. Recommend that identifying members of Council should remain with an election process;
2. Recommend that identifying members of Council should occur via a selection process;
or
3. Other?

3.   Criticism from veterinarians on CVO practices;
Page 50 of the agenda,
Criticizing Other Members and the Regulator
Practitioners are allowed to criticize other members and their regulator, but only to a reasonable point. The tone and content of these criticisms is problematic when it is disrespectful and when it undermines the integrity of regulatory processes or it brings the profession into disrepute. It was also deemed to be inappropriate for a member to threaten their regulatory body. Case Reference: Zuk v Alberta Dental Association and College, 2018 ABCA 270.))
