SANTA IS COMING TO SAALM

Billy Keen’s VISIONS OF SANTA, a unique holiday exhibition, is coming to San Antonio this December. This remarkable exhibition, a collection of Santa portraits, rejoices in the goodness and generosity of humanity. The suite of 45 paintings has evolved over a parallel 45 years and has been exhibited throughout Texas almost 30 times. It will now return to San Antonio at the San Antonio Art League & Museum, free and open to the public, from December 19 through December 31.

An opening reception is planned for Wednesday, December 19 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. For the day of the exhibition opening, the Art League will extend its regular hours of 10 a.m.-3:00 p.m. through to the reception opening at 5 p.m.  The artist Billy Keen will be on hand to discuss his work.
The reception is free and open to the public.

The VISIONS OF SANTA series began when Keen embraced Santa as the subject of an art demonstration and then hung the demonstration painting in his one-year-old son’s bedroom. The following year, he painted another for his second son. Inevitably, the paintings became an annual tradition.

Keen’s VISIONS OF SANTA collection is treasured by young and old alike for its insight into the loving graces of the Santa figure, as well as for its awareness of the human responsibility to those less fortunate. In 1997, Keen crossed paths with a homeless man. “You’re not always sure when you’re encountering Santa Claus, yet this man had the spirit of Santa,” Keen recalls.

This exhibit is sure to inspire lively conversations about portraiture, artistic vision, culture and tradition! Bring your friends, your children and grandchildren to the Art League to see Santa in all his manifestations!

Scores of guests visited the San Antonio Art League & Museum on Saturday, December 1st, during the King William Home Tour. We thank the King William Association for including us this year.

Special thanks to Super-Docents Stefani Job Spears and Liz and Ernie Lieke for telling the visitors about our wonderful jewel-box of a museum and gallery. They helped SAALM make lots of new friends, and increased our exposure by leaps and bounds.

What a great start to the Holiday Season!
BEHIND THE SCENES

SAALM artists have been working hard on their Celebrity Bowls for the Empty Bowls fundraiser Benefiting SAMMinistries which will take place on Sunday, March 3, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Southwest School of Art.

Art League artists worked with underglazes to create their designs on hand-thrown bowls made by the San Antonio Potters Guild in this first-time collaboration. Take a look at some of the SAALM artists' bowls that are ready to be fired by Potters Guild members:

Finally, you'll see a great group of new artists and veteran artists in the first Members Gallery exhibit of 2019.

And there's still time to check out the work of the current Members Gallery artists until January 5.

Opened in September of 2017,  the highly successful SAALM Members Gallery offers a rare opportunity for visitors to view and purchase works from outstanding Art League member artists in a salon-style setting. The exhibiting group changes every three months, giving all SAALM artists the chance to exhibit their best work for show and sale. Thanks, as always, to our Members Gallery chairpersons, Michelle Belto and Laura Roberts.
