DCSC Launches Restorative Justice Program at Local School

This past month, a local school reached out to Dragonfly Centre (DCSC) and asked if they could create a presentation to address behavioural challenges in the classroom. The Grade 4 classroom had been struggling with interpersonal friction and bullying between students.

“This was a timely request as our agency has been developing a restorative justice program for just this situation,” explained Cheryl Bujold, Executive Director of DCSC  “This year our educational team has incorporated the use of restorative circles into our school programming as a way to promote a deeper learning experience in a safe and comfortable way.” The local school jumped at the opportunity to have DCSC launch its newest program.

DCSC Facilitators invited the classroom into a circle and passed a talking stick around providing each individual with an opportunity to speak from their heart. In 45 minutes, the class, together created three agreements that now hang on the classroom wall and outlines how they have agreed to interact with one another.

There are a number of positive benefits to incorporating restorative justice in schools and classrooms. The goals of the program are to:

  • Nurture healthy relationships among and between students and adults, including parents and/or guardians;
  • Increase meaningful communication;
  • Reduce the number of disruptive friction and transform the ways we see conflict.

DCSC is excited to offer this program to schools in the Northeast Region of Alberta because it is directly related to the promotion of healthy relationships and respect amongst all community members.
