The School of Audiology and Speech Sciences celebrates 50 years next year!

2019 marks fifty successful years for the School of Audiology and Speech Sciences. The School has come far since 1969, when it began as a division of the Department of Paediatrics at UBC. For 20 years the School had just six faculty members and an average class size of 12. Today, our faculty complement has more than doubled and our student numbers have quadrupled!

The School’s expansion would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our clinical faculty! We are incredibly grateful to you all for your valuable contributions to the School’s educational mission over the past half a century.

To celebrate this important milestone and all those who have been integral to the School’s history, we are planning to host a series of events and activities throughout 2019. This will include a special 50th anniversary colloquium series and a celebratory weekend event including speakers, poster presentations, open house, and gala dinner. Click here http://audiospeech.ubc.ca/about/sass-50th-anniversary/ for regular updates.

In the meantime, if you have any ideas about what speakers you would like us to bring in for the colloquia series or celebratory weekend, please send your suggestions to director.assistant@audiospeech.ubc.ca

We look forward to celebrating the School's accomplishments with you!

Dear Clinical Educators:

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing commitment to the education of our class. The knowledge and guidance that you share with us is truly the greatest gift. The time and energy you dedicate to guiding our clinical practice does not go unnoticed. Thank you again for your generosity in helping to shape future generations of audiologists and speech language pathologists.

Warm wishes for the holiday season!

We are excited to share the first three learning modules, now available on the Clinical Educator Community of Practice site http://clinicaled.audiospeech.ubc.ca/education/:
  • Unpacking the Roles of a Clinical Educator
  • Giving and Receiving Feedback
  • Creating a Balance
These topics are based on Clinical Educator feedback, and other topics are planned for 2019. We hope these modules will contribute to your continuing professional development in the area of Clinical Education.
We have many Clinical Faculty who are stars at the school. The Faculty Highlight is our way of showcasing what they're doing to enhance our community. This month's feature is on Jenny Hatton, the Audiology Clinical Faculty Rep for the School.

Jenny’s interest in Audiology originally stemmed from her work with Dr. Stapells in the HAPLAP (Human Auditory Physiology Lab) at UBC during her undergraduate degree, along with her personal experience growing up with hearing loss. She has worked at BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) since graduating from the UBC SASS in 2008. She joined the BC Early Hearing Program (BCEHP) in August 2010. In her current Research and Clinical Audiology role, she provides Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) testing at BCCH, as well as ABR testing support and training to BCEHP Audiologists. She is involved in creating clinical practice guidelines for the BCEHP/BCCH and conducts research in the field of pediatric electrophysiology in collaboration with the UBC.

Jenny became the School's Clinical Faculty representative for Audiology in 2016, serving as a liaison between clinical audiology faculty and the School. Her role involves seeking feedback, news, and updates from Clinical Faculty as well as the School; this information is then communicated through School meetings and regular emails to clinical audiology faculty.

Her work for the BCEHP and her role as the SASS audiology clinical faculty rep are similar in that they both involve interacting with clinicians across the province and from different clinical settings (pediatric, adult, community and hospital settings). Jenny enjoys the diverse nature of her BCEHP and SASS roles and the opportunity to foster positive partnerships between clinical and university faculty.

Jenny can be reached at jhatton@cw.bc.ca

The School of Audiology and Speech Sciences and March of Dimes Canada are proud to announce that they will be hosting the International Aphasia Rehabilitation Conference (IARC) from June 18 – June 20, 2020 at the UBC Vancouver Campus.

The Chair of the organizing committee, Dr. Tami Howe, alongside co-chairs Eavan Sinden and Brent Page, were successful in their bid to host this internationally renowned conference, which was announced at IARC 2018 in Portugal in September.

As planning gets underway in the New Year, the organizing committee will be reaching out to BC’s network of aphasia clinicians and researchers to make this a truly collaborative event. For any questions, please contact iarc2020@audiospeech.ubc.ca. We also encourage you to check in with the website www.iarc2020.com regularly for updates, as well as following us on Twitter @#iarc2020.
Check out UBC’s Language Sciences Initiative, which seeks to facilitate collaborations that advance our understanding of how language shapes our individual and collective human experience. Anyone engaged in language-related research or practice – including clinical faculty - is welcome to join.  They have funds and staff support available for collaborative student and faculty research, grant facilitation, community engagement and outreach, knowledge mobilization, and professional development, so keep an eye out on their website!
