2019 Year of the Tree

All throughout 2019 we’ll be focusing on the unique role trees, tree canopy, and green space play in the health and well-being of our communities, wildlife, and environment in King County. Starting off the year we’re proud to announce our Tree Canopy Planner Tool. This tool will help South King County cities prioritize and enhance their green spaces. Trees play an important role in both human and ecosystem health. Trees decrease pollution and increase mental well-being. Follow our social media for upcoming workshops, planting parties, and more!

Tree Canopy Planner Tool Available for Cities

KCD is pleased to share access to urban tree and canopy planning software as part of our recently completed South King County Tree Canopy Assessment Initiative. This valuable web-based tool helps cities and their communities View, Plan and Grow their urban tree canopy. Canopy Planner software displays tree canopy data in maps and supports analysis and modeling so that communities can plan and prioritize tree canopy and urban forest enhancement projects. You’re invited to explore the tool by clicking here.

King County Farmers
We Need Your Feedback!

Small and mid-sized farm businesses have found profit in direct-to-market sales but often find that they need better marketing and promotion support in order to sustain and amplify that profit.

Earlier this year KCD contracted with the University of Washington (UW) Center for Public Health Nutrition to launch a survey of King County’s food producers. The survey will help us better support farmers in growing your direct-market farm businesses. Respondents can enter a raffle to win one of 20 $50 Visa cash cards. The survey is anonymous, and closes at the end of 2018.

We need your help for this survey to have impact.  As someone that supports a resilient regional food system, we encourage you to complete the survey: Click HERE to Take the Survey.

May Creek Restoration
Work Party
December 15, Renton

King Conservation District is hosting a volunteer planting event in Renton on Saturday, December 15, from 10 AM to 2 PM. Come join us and help restore the buffer habitat along May Creek, near where it drains into Lake Washington, by planting native trees and shrubs. Fall Chinook has been reported to spawn and rear in this creek; other species also documented are Coho, sockeye, and winter steelhead.

This restoration project will contribute to providing habitat for these endangered salmon species, as well as providing a continuous wildlife and habitat corridor, protecting steep and sensitive slopes, and providing surface water storage capacity. We will provide gloves, tools, and light refreshments. This is a family-friendly event. Groups and all experience welcome! To find out more about this event, email volunteer@kingcd.org.

Orca Recovery Day
A Success Across Puget Sound

On November 10, ten conservation districts across Puget Sound held events to educate, motivate and bring people together on projects to help our struggling orca population. In total, over 700 people came together in more than a dozen events to restore native vegetation, remove garbage and invasives, and support healthy streams.

KCD hosted a volunteer planting event on Vashon Island. We didn’t know what to expect on a wet and cool November day and were absolutely thrilled with the turnout! Over 35 volunteers, mostly from off-island, came out to help, including Girl Scouts Troop 41706 from Auburn.

KCD Launches
New Workshop

On Saturday, November 17th, homeowners joined KCD for the launch of a new curriculum, Our Land Our Water: Stewarding Streams for Future Generations. This workshop focused on the how-to’s of protecting water quality and restoring streams to promote wildlife habitat and salmon health. KCD planner, Ashley Allen, also led participants through a restoration site at Twin Ponds Park in Shoreline to highlight native plants and management of invasive weeds.

Thanksgiving Poultry Processing Day Recap

On November 17 at Jay Mirro's Soggy Bottom Farm, KCD hosted a well-attended workshop demonstrating how to use KCD's Poultry Processing Equipment. Participants raved about the workshop and the wonderful job that Kevin Watson did. Kevin brought in Laile Fletcher and Mary Jo Burson from Crooked Shed Farm, LLC to help teach the good principles of humane and proper poultry processing. Laile and Mary Jo mentored attendees on animal handling, humane knocking, scalding, plucking, evisceration, cooling and packaging.
