Grambling State VP for Student Affairs Ponton will take over the Tigers' department come the first of next year when current GSU boss Bryant exits. Bryant: "I loved being here at Grambling. I loved what I did, the camaraderie I established. You never want to automatically leave, but some things are meant to be. And I think it was time to do something different. […] Nothing is lined up. But I have my agent looking for a couple of opportunities. Nothing as of yet, but there are some promising things out there." Gambling Prez Gallot: "He’s not leaving under a cloud or anything like that. It’s never a good time, but his stock is at its highest and it’s a good time for him to explore other opportunities." (link)
Southern Miss Prez Bennett names Golden Eagles Deputy AD Mitchell as the interim leader with Senior Assoc. AD for Development Morrison serving as Interim Deputy AD. Bennett says he'll pop around on a regional tour to get feedback from fans on what they would like to see in the next AD in Hattiesburg. Also from Bennett in a letter to fans, "I am concerned that we are searching for a new athletics director for the third time in recent years. I am committed to a thorough selection process that will result in a Director of Athletics who will bring stability to the department, as well as consistent and sustained success for many years. […] The selection process for our next Director of Athletics will not be quick. The complexity of our challenges will necessitate a different approach to the hiring process, one that requires patience, the engagement of our stakeholders, and a thorough review of our department." (link, link)
Tons of compelling content out of the first day of Learfield's Intercollegiate Athletics Forum alongside SBJ from the Crowne Plaza in New York City. A number of journalists had the panels covered from all angles & the SBJ team captured & shared key video snippets via its Twitter feed. (link - scroll down); AAC Commish Aresco started the day with some thoughts, "You look at the other games that they’ve played and won and the adversity they’ve faced and you say to yourself, 'Well, what do they have to do?' And the question then becomes, is half of college football precluded from playing in this playoff? I’m not singling out anyone, but (the AAC has) got seven so-called (power five) wins this year, 33 in the last four years, we’ve had big wins against top programs." In the same session Texas boss Del Conte indicated the Longhorns would not consider independence & are super happy with the Longhorn Network partnership. (link); NCAA Prez Emmert with his annual sit down & certainly what made the most headlines is thoughts on the possibility of major changes for MBB not getting done by March Madness, though he did expect more key movement by the time he chats next December. Emmert also pointed to the challenge of esports with its gender participation trends, as well as questionable content of some games. (link); Big 12 Commish Bowlsby continues to say no one really knows what the TV/OTT landscape will look like just three years from now. Calls athletics programs "perspiring arts" in a quip on esports. Bowlsby also indicated an aggregation of Tier 3 rights in his league could be possible for the next round of major negotiations. Notre Dame MBB HC Brey was on stage with Yahoo's Forde & does expect more ineligibilities to result from the MBB-FBI developments. Big Ten boss Delany notes the competitive success differences between Maryland & Rutgers since they both joined the league. Thinks there will be some talk among his group on a potential change in FB title game setup. Says the CFP selection process has made it clear playing an FCS opponent (or two) is a-ok. Pac-12 Commish Scott ran through a number of items, including an expectation that key digital/OTT players will continue to test the market over the next two to three years. Arizona State's Wong moderated a panel with former Tulane Prez Cohen & Houston Prez Khator. Cohen staunched on the belief that boards should be entirely replaced when a Prez/Chancellor is fired. Intimate convo with former ESPN Prez Bodenheimer included all sorts of stories from his tenure in Bristol, as well as some insightful leadership maxims, "You can make a mistake as long as it's an honest mistake." Also says leaders better be paying attention to what's important to your people. So much more. Check out John Ourand, Dennis Dodd, Dan Wolken Adam Rittenberg, Brett McMurphy, Jason Belzer for more from the event.
USA Today's Berkowitz, with help from the Spencer Fane team & others, at it again, this time with a FBS FB AC & support staff compensation database & analysis. Incarnate Word AD Wickstrom goes deep with ADU as its latest 'Athletic Director in Residence' with conversation on FB & revenue momentum (+425% in season ticket sales, +630% in sponsorships), facilities progress, working with Prez Evans, the importance of having consistency in the Deputy AD role, what he's learned from his previous AD stops & more. Notable: "The proof of a supportive president can be seen when changes occur that enhance the student-athlete experience. […] We have three different types of goals (budgeted goals, achievable goals, and stretch goals); the achievable goals turn into the new budget goals and the stretch goals become the new achievable goals, thus allowing new stretch goals to be developed. […] I want the athletics department staff to feel like they have the ability to think outside the box and help us get better every day." (link)
Miami (OH) AD Sayler adds the Chief of Staff title to Deputy AD Killy's header. Killy will continue to execute all his previous responsibilities, now adds FB sport administrator duties & oversight of the Human Performance & Wellness unit. Sayler: "This well-earned promotion is the result of his hard work, creativity and passion for the student-athletes that Jude exhibits every single day. Jude has played a significant role in all of the major accomplishments that have occurred here at Miami during his time in Oxford and he has the respect of everyone in the department." (link); New Mexico AD Nunez parts ways with Deputy AD Hutchins in a move that includes a $175K buyout. The donation brings the Monarchs' fundraising total to $29M. ODU AD Selig: "Barry Kornblau has flown under the radar a long time. Not a lot of our fans know who he is." Kornblau: "ODU wasn't nearly as large as it is now. But I got an outstanding education, and I credit that education for my success in life." (link)
The NCAA hands down penalties to Oregon MBB, WBB, FB & Women's Track & Field in connection to violations out of each program. LEAD1 boss McMillen's 'Byte of the Week' is on philanthropic giving for athletic departments as donations have been such a key piece of facility & departmental upgrades over the years. McMillen: "...at risk as college athletics may be hit by a double whammy: the recent elimination by Congress of tax breaks for charitable giving, and the potential for the courts to professionalize college sports." Watch. (link)

(link); New Charlotte HC Healy deal is worth $700K annually, plus a bevy of incentives & bonus opportunities all listed here. (link)
Urban Meyer: Could Meyer be the next AD for the Bucks? Current OSU boss Smith: "No I don’t see that yet. Could that be down the road? I don’t see that yet. My biggest concern with Urban is filling his plate. He’s got a lot to learn about administration. We won’t have a job for him that’s as intensive and demanding as what he’s had. So how will he transition into that will be different. I haven’t thought about that. I shouldn’t say that it’s not a possibility, but it hadn’t entered my mind. It’s not my intent. My intent is to make sure we get the best out of him in what we ask him to do, and make sure that he’s value added." (link); Meyer to Yahoo's Thamel, "I never thought of it as scared, more anxious. I’m still relatively young. I’m a very passionate, hard-working person who is going to have to fill a void. […] There’s a little anxiety involved in what’s next. I’ve thought about that. I’m not a wake-up late kind of guy. I hope I find a passion." (link); ESPN's Le Batard indicates Trace Armstrong removed himself as Meyer's agent back in the fall due to developments around the situation involving former OSU AC Smith. (link)
Long Q&A with Indiana AD Glass on his 10 years of leadership in Bloomington. Points to the stretch of parting ways with former FB HC Wilson & MBB HC Crean as one of his more disappointing moments directing the Hoosiers. Indicates he's most proud of the Leadership Academy implemented for student-athletes. Lots more, including, "The super commonality in all these athletic program scandals is that good people didn’t say anything and/or people who were told didn’t do the right thing. […] For better or worse, we never get to write our own legacy, so it sort of lives in the hearts and minds of the people you touch. And I hope they feel good things." (link)
MAC Commish Steinbrecher goes '7 on 7' with the Football Bowl Association. Did you know Steinbrecher is the Chair of the College Football Officiating Board of Managers? "The CFO worked extensively with the NCAA Football Rules Committee to ensure passage and implementation of the targeting rule and the rule on low hits on quarterbacks. There has been significant improvement in the consistent application of rules and in officiating mechanics – but this is always a work in progress and there is always room for continued improvement." A bit more. (link)
Former Eastern Michigan Women's Tennis HC Wiseman is again the current EMU Women's Tennis boss as he's been rehired to lead the reinstated program. Eagles AD Wetherbee: "We are excited to welcome back Jayson, Last year, he showed that he was able to make our team competitive in the Mid-American Conference and in the region. We look forward to seeing him continue the momentum that he started last year as we restart our tennis program." EMU will still not participate as a MAC program this season after the process that led to its initial discontinuation. (link)
Kansas CFO Kaufman points to the NCAA's annual financial statement for the Jayhawks as a better measure of the department's financial standing as a standard financial review includes a number of non-cash items like depreciation. Kaufman in an email to KUSports.com, "This is why we focus on ‘operating cash-basis’ view of the organization, for which the NCAA financial statement is the best indicator. It is disappointing that you continue to misinterpret the GAAP financial statements and use misleading data in your stories." KU Chancellor Girod is more concerned with increasing revenues for athletics & freshening up the facilities portfolio than cutting expenses. Jayhawks AD Long is on the same page. (link)
East Carolina athletics will get $20M from the university, split evenly to settle a deficit and make capital improvements for Pirates facilities. The first $10M comes from a pool of $149M in non-state auxiliary funds to cover the projected $4.2M deficit at the end of FY19, with the remaining funds available for future potential athletics debt. The other $10M comes from an ECU Physicians accrued fund balance worth $95M. The decision comes in part from the "deep dive" special adviser Hart has done since March. (link)
According to documents filed with the NCAA , the North Texas athletic department is $63.19M in debt at the end of FY17, adding $4,213,178 to the total during the last fiscal cycle. The athletic department's debt is 14.5% of the school's overall debt of $435.6M. In FY19, UNT will pay $4,575,207 toward its debt load, surpassing the required amount of principal and interest by $300K. AD Baker: "We don’t have a note over there where we’re borrowing money and going in the negative. If there’s debt, it’s debt that’s being owed on facilities that’s being paid." More details. (link)
More details out of Anchorage where a 7.0 earthquake rocked Alaska Anchorage's campus last week. New AD Myford on dealing with this particular natural disaster for the first time: "At other places, I've dealt with tornado warnings and hurricane and things like that. The major difference I see is there is absolutely no warning for something like this. And you go from your normal day, and just getting going in this case for your normal day, to what is turned upside down. ... What has occurred since Friday has been more remarkable. People have quickly come together regardless of what their real job is to get things done and get things back on the road to repair." Alaska Airlines Center sustained minor damage in addition to the floor flooding. The auxiliary gym and gymnastics center had ceiling and sheet rock damage and Saturday's annual Green and Gold meet has been canceled accordingly. (link); The Pac-12 has missed payroll for its MBB officials twice so far this season. Head of Communications Walker calls it an "error" and says all payments are up to date now.
