Narita Memorial Proton Center, Japan, treats the first patient with the treatment planning system RayStation

Narita Memorial Proton Center in Toyohashi, Japan, has treated its first patient using planning in RayStation. The system was used to plan a pencil beam scanning treatment (PBS) which was delivered to a prostate cancer patient by the IBA Proteus®ONE compact proton therapy solution.

The center was established in April 2018, and this first patient treatment was conducted in early September.

The RayStation system at Narita Memorial Proton Center includes multi criteria optimization (MCO), which seeks to decrease manual planning time, provide a better understanding of tradeoffs between conflicting planning goals, and improve treatment plan quality.

Japan is one of the world's most technologically advanced treatment planning markets, and particle planning is continuously growing in the region. RaySearch has a strong user base in Japan and is a
world-wide market leader for proton therapy planning software.

UCSF expands with RayStation at Mission Bay

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), has added RayStation-licenses for expansion at UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay, California. These licenses add to the existing wide area network infrastructure, as a new facility that will open in 2019, will use RayStation for treatment planning.

This is the third UCSF facility to use RayStation, in addition to the existing centers at UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion and UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights in San Francisco. Their vision is “Three campuses with one mission”– which will be put into practice by utilizing advanced technologies such as adaptive therapy, advanced automatic planning tools such as Plan Explorer, Fallback Planning and Autobreast planning.

Johan Löf, CEO of RaySearch, says: “UCSF has been a very important partner for us, both for RayStation as well as for RayCare*, our new oncology information system. We are excited to continue our collaboration and give them the best support as they introduce new centers and modalities in the San Francisco area.”

University Medical Center Groningen treats patients with RayStation feature Plan Explorer

UMC Groningen (UMCG) has started treating patients using the treatment planning system (TPS) RayStation's feature Plan Explorer. The center utilizes Plan Explorer for prostate cases, using VMAT. So far, approximately 60 patients have been treated.

UMCG has been a RaySearch-client since 2013 and use RayStation as their main TPS for external beam proton and photon radiotherapy. The RayStation installation at the center includes adaptive radiation therapy, multi-criteria optimization and radiobiology, in complement to the Plan Explorer feature. The center is also equipped with 9 Elekta-linacs and an IBA Proteus® Plus with two gantry rooms.

Since becoming a customer, the center has been closely involved with development in the RaySearch headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden. UMCG and RaySearch currently have a research collaboration about Plan Explorer, and the center is also a clinical collaboration partner in the development of the next oncology information system RayCare.

Elekta Unity MR-linac featured in 11 abstracts at ASTRO 2018

Diverse studies demonstrate transformative potential for MR/RT in various cancer indications to deliver radiation to a variety of tumor types while protecting nearby tissues and organs

Elekta announced that its Elekta Unity magnetic resonance radiation therapy (MR/RT) system was featured in 11 abstracts at the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Annual Meeting, which took place October 21-24 in San Antonio, Texas. Elekta Unity, which received CE Mark in June 2018 and currently pending U.S. FDA 510(k) premarket clearance, is the first high-field MR/RT system that allows clinicians to see and track difficult-to-visualize soft tissue anatomies in real-time during radiation dosing.

“As a transformative approach to cancer care, clinical implementation of MRgRT requires not only novel hardware and software systems, but also needs clinical evidence to enable treatment that is optimized for specific tumor types and to address the unique anatomy and tumor biology of each patient,” said X. Allen Li, PhD, Chief Physicist, Department of Radiation Oncology at Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Clinical Cancer Center.

Varian Unveils New Bravos Afterloader System for Brachytherapy Treatments

Varian today announced the Bravos™ afterloader system for High Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy treatments. Based on over five years of in-clinic research, Bravos is an integrated system designed to improve the patient and clinic experience by simplifying brachytherapy treatment and providing greater workflow efficiency.

HDR brachytherapy involves delivering radiotherapy by temporarily placing a tiny radioactive source directly into the tumor or other targeted area. Using an afterloader, clinicians are able to position the radioactive source in a needle, catheter or tumor-specific applicator following a pattern that has been designed to create a highly conformal dose distribution within or on the surface of the patient's anatomy. Once the treatment is completed, the afterloader safely returns the source to the afterloader.
