American History Traveling Museum: Unspoken Truths

Please join us at Eastlake High School for a special community event Monday, December 3rd from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. Eastlake’s Black Student Union presents Delbert Richardson’s award winning American History Traveling Museum: Unspoken Truths. The museum is open to all ages and will be set up in the Eastlake High School Library.

This travelling museum is a collection of artifacts that symbolizes the African experience in the Americas and Europe. Some are joyful relics of family moments and everyday products invented or patented by African Americans – the ironing board, cell phone technology, golf tees, and a pencil sharpener. Others are the crude reminders of a painful past: A runaway slave collar – circa 1800. Branding irons. Shackles. A shotgun. All are equally displayed in The Unspoken Truths African American Museum.

Also chronicled is the rich history of Africans in Africa prior to American chattel slavery, the experiences and impact of American chattel slavery, the Jim Crow Era, and the many contributions African Americans have had on scientific, cultural, and technological innovations in the U.S. and the world.

In addition to the evening event, the PTSA is funding an all-day viewing of the museum for Eastlake’s Junior Class on  December 4th. The museum will be open from 7:30 am to 2:20pm and is appropriate for ages 15+.

You can read more information about this travelling museum on their website
For questions about either event please contact Rachelle Horner at rhorner@lwsd.org

Reminder- 2018 Scholarship Basket Auction

The LWPTSA Council will have their 2018 Scholarship Basket Auction on Thursday, December 6 from 10-11am at the LWSD Resource Center in Redmond. Auction baskets are currently on display in the Resource Center, and you can bid now - all of the proceeds go to scholarships. Bid on a lunch with our new Superintendent, Dr. Jane Stavem! We have several spa and beauty experiences this year and lots of items by local artists and homegrown businesses - some well established like the Pro Club and Salish Lodge. Bidding must be done in person, although you can view the baskets here

The morning of December 6 will be a festive event with complimentary coffee drinks, fantastic raffle items, and a door prize for people who have invited and brought a friend! Do some holiday shopping, or just enjoy mingling with other people who value and support education. You don't have to be present to win, so swing by the district headquarters and bid when you are at Redmond Town Center. If you have questions, email auction@lwptsa.net. Otherwise, we look forward to seeing you on December 6!

There is no better time to be part of the EHS PTSA!

The EHS PTSA has several volunteer positions available for board, committee chairs, or for smaller, well-defined and short-term volunteer opportunities.  Whatever your experience or available time, chances are we have an opportunity for you to contribute.

As part of the EHS PTSA, you can make a difference by helping the phenomenal teachers and staff ensure that the families and students of Eastlake have access to the resources, tools, and support they need for the best education experience possible.

These positions provide valuable opportunities to build relationships with other outstanding volunteers and staff members in a supportive, positive and fun environment. Serving on the board is practical and informative, and it is also rewarding and energizing because what you do supports so many people in our community.

Pantry Packs 2018 Holiday Hunger Campaign

December 3-14

More than 800 Lake Washington School District students don’t get enough to eat, and that number is growing. Feed Washington is campaigning to make sure every student in the Lake Washington School District has enough to eat each weekend. $25 provides a month's worth of weekend food packs for one student. For the cost of a few lattes, you can help alleviate food insecurity in your community!

Last year over 25,000 Pantry Packs went out to students in our community. Our goal for this campaign is to raise $60,000. Please help us continue to make this possible. Thank you so much for your support. Don't forget to apply at your company for matching funds! To donate and support hungry kids in your community, please click here or view their flyer here

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training

Inglewood PTSA is hosting a Youth Mental Health First Aid Training on December 4th as one of its initiatives this school year.

According to the Youth Mental Health First Aid website, this training “is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addiction challenge or a crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.” Learn more about Youth Mental Health First Aid on their website

The instructor for this training is Larry Wright, PhD, the Executive Director of the Lake Washington Schools Foundation and a non-profit leader with more than a decade of experience helping youth achieve their potential in school and in life.

Fundraiser- Ice Skate in Bellevue and raise money for your school

November 23-December 21, 2018 & January 1-13, 2019

The Bellevue Downtown Association is thrilled to provide a turn-key fundraising opportunity for schools in the area, including Eastlake High School! This will be held at the 2018-2019 Bellevue Downtown Ice Rink presented by Alaska Mileage Plan. Each year, the ice rink is set up as a temporary structure at the Bellevue Downtown Park. This rink features the region’s largest covered open-air ice skating experience. Admission is $15/person (includes skate rental), and $10/person for ages eight and under. Details about the rink here

The Bellevue Downtown Association is offering $3 from every paying visitor from our school who notify rink staff upon arrival what school they are affiliated with. A tally is kept of the total number of visits from the dates listed above and a check to Eastlake High School will be forwarded by the end of January 2019. For example, if you have 50 people skate on December 3 and 45 on January 8, you will have raised $285 for our school. So easy! You were going to go ice skating anyway, right?!

Ice skating opens to the public on Friday, November 23 and closes on Sunday, January 13 and is a part of the Bellevue Magic Season. Families can make it a night of holiday fun with a visit to Snowflake Lane at The Bellevue Collection and stroll through Garden d’Lights at the Bellevue Botanical Garden.
