Dear Supporters,

With the holiday season, or as we call it "the silly season" upon us, we would like to thank everyone that supported us throughout the year.
Our staff experienced a chaotic month, especially with the recent fires in the area, and with only a handful of staff it was no easy task to assist everyone in need, but as always our team jumped in and got the job done.  So sit back and enjoy the November overview.
Pawfully yours.....

It felt like history repeated itself......

On Monday 29 October 2018 we received the first word, that assistance was needed in the Karatara area as the fires already reached "bosdorp" at the back of the little town and people were evacuated but sadly animals were left behind. This went on for the whole week in different areas as the fire spread.  Our group of 7 set out to the different areas, as people were evacuated, we were scared, shocked and saddened by the pictures that awaited us.  And trying to catch frantic dogs and cats, were no easy task, but we managed to assist as many animals as possible in the short time frames we had in certain places, to make sure we were not trapped.
After all this, animals still had to be taken to our kennels, be assessed for injuries, wounds or breathing problems
More than 150 animals were housed at our small kennels that can only accommodate approximately 60 animals at a time.  These animals included dogs, cats, chickens and pigs.

All dogs and cats not sterilized have been sterilized as well as vaccinated before they were returned home with food, bowls and blanket.
We want to thank our team for their hard work and dedication, not once did they complain about working long hours or about  the dangers they were exposed to, well done everyone!

Goudvelt -  Images below - A scared and frantic dog hiding underneath a wooden house, while we are trying to evacuate animals, our team did not hesitate to assist, because no one would be left behind!
A few babies had to be treated for breathing problems, but they all pulled through and went home!
Going home....

KAWS ROCKS THE LEISURE ISLE FESTIVAL!

At the beginning of November, Leisure Isle once again hosted their annual Festival, and, as usual for the past 10 years, KAWS were there with our Christmas gifts table. This is a much loved and anticipated stall at the Festival and many people make it their first stop to stock up on Christmas gifts for friends and family. The items that are used for the table are either purchased from our charity shop or donated specifically for the stall by friends and well wishers throughout the year. Then 3 weeks before the Festival, the magic starts to happen...

This year our loyal and dedicated helpers gathered in October at the home of Elaine Elliott, who opened up her garage to us for our work space for that time, whilst also providing delicious lunches (with wine!) for the workers, which certainly helped the creative juices flow.  Beautifully wrapped and presented Christmas gifts were created by our helpers by selecting, mixing and matching and finally wrapping and decorating the many items that were available to use. Toiletries, jewellery, stationery, toys, decorations, crockery, ornaments, kitchenware, Christmas items and delightful and valuable collectables were all used to make up unique and fascinating gifts.

For the two days of the Festival, our KAWS volunteers worked on the stand and enjoyed meeting Festival visitors and selling our goods. Our 2019 KAWS calendars were also on sale which drew many people to the stall to be the first to purchase this much sought after item. Special thanks must go to Irene Jacobs and Joan   who walked around the Festival grounds and sold the majority of the  tickets for our champagne and whisky traffle and cuddly toys raffle. The total tickets sold brought in an amount of R7000! When everything was totalled up, we raised an amount of almost R40,000 including a R5000 donation from a generous supporter - a new record! An enormous thank you to everyone who was involved in this event, the collectors, the wrappers, the people who transported the goods, those who set up and took down the stall, the ladies who worked tirelessly over the weekend selling goods and raffle tickets and of course the public for so generously supporting our Christmas stall.  Roll on next year!
