Chandra - Transportation EPs 2LP
(Telephone Explosion) LISTEN
As the daughter of conceptual artist Dennis Oppenheim, Chandra was exposed to the cutting age conceptual art and theatre in New York during the early 1980's. She even began performing in her own DIY stage productions which led to interest from no-wave / synth-pop group The Dance, who were looking for a new muse and perhaps front-person to broaden their sound. They found the 12 year old Chandra and self-released the Transportation EP on their own label. Her command of the songs on the EP is wild, balancing a perfect amalgamation of avant synth pop, no wave and dub sensibilities, with an array of nervous energy. Their performances were met with acclaim and hype, though Chandra proved to be smart enough to not get sucked in. She decided to move on with her education and retired from music. At 14! Though she continued to make art and design clothes. Telephone Explosion's new treatment of Transportation includes the original 4-song EP, a second 4-song EP with an all-kid band (unissued until 2008) and now 2, never before heard demos. The Upsetters - Scratch The Upsetter Again LP (Antarctica Starts Here) LISTEN
Released in 1970, Scratch The Upsetter Again is prime-era Lee Scratch Perry adventuring further into the possibilities of studio experimentation. The largely instrumental rocksteady cuts feature Lee in a playful mood while sampling with lovely reverb and a soulful strut. Further exploration would be on the horizon as his dub sound was slowly being formulated, however hearing Mr. Perry cutting these joyful instrumentals is a treat all in its own. Additionally, there are some vocal cuts with Dave Barker (of Dave & Ansel Collins), taking on The Shirelles' "Will You Still Love Me" and Alva Lewis doing the choice cut "She Is Gone Again."
Lee Scratch Perry's sound was cutting edge then, and it still is today. First official LP reissue. (Dom)
