November 28, 2018

Dear Muddy Brook Families,

I am writing to inform parents and families of a change of dates for the release of this year’s mid-year progress reports.  On our original school calendar, December 21 was identified as the date to send home report cards from the first half of the school year.
The new date for mid-year progress reports will be January 25, 2019.

This date change is being made to provide more accurate and complete reports of student progress.  As part of the mid-year reports, the school provides results of winter benchmark testing - assessments of basic skills in reading and math.

Benchmark testing of the entire school can take up to three weeks to complete.  Incorporating results of benchmarks into progress reports with narrative comments can take an additional week.  There is clerical work and administrator review that could take another week. These facts, and the realities of when the holidays fall in our school-year calendar,  have meant that past years’ benchmark testing would need to begin by mid-November to have results ready for December progress reports.

A strong consensus of faculty and administrators felt that pushing the benchmarks and progress reports back by a month would give a more balanced look at the school year and would better portray students’ growing abilities.   The exact middle of this school year is January 16, 2019, and students will now be completing benchmark assessments in the second and third week of January. With report cards now scheduled for January 25, information should accurately reflect the progress of a true half year, as opposed to the first two and half months prior to Thanksgiving.

If you have questions or concerns about this change, please contact me at Muddy Brook.  At any time, parents seeking information about their child’s progress are encouraged to contact the teacher at any point during the school year.

Best,

Timothy Lee, Principal
