Dear Resurrection Family and Friends,

The word Advent comes from the Latin word advenio which means “to come to.” Traditionally, Advent has been the celebration of the coming of God in human flesh into the world. The Greek word for “to come” is parousia, which has a sense of “looking ahead” in its meaning.  That is why, over the centuries, the celebration of Advent has included both the first coming of Christ celebrated in the Christmas liturgy (order of worship), but also the second coming of Christ at the end of the age.

You may be interested to know that during the 4th century Advent became a season of fasting and penitence, a tradition that lasted for the next thousand years. The Advent color was a very dark purple, which symbolized both fasting and repentance, as well as royalty. However, the Sarum Rite, a particular English liturgy used between 1100 and 1500 AD, chose a dark blue for Advent in contrast with the deep violet of Easter. Since the 16th century, the Anglican Church officially adopted the dark or “Sarum blue” as the Advent color and replaced fasting and penitence with an emphasis on faith, hope, joy and love.

I am excited about our Advent preaching series on the Message of Malachi, and Stephen and the Maryland State Boychoir will lead Advent Lessons and Carols on Friday, December 7 at 7:30pm.

May we celebrate this Advent with awe and gratitude at the first coming of our Lord and with joy and hope as we eagerly await His return.

Expectantly,
~ David
