FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT

(2 December 2018)

Jeremiah 33:14–16          1 Thessalonians 3:9–13          Luke 19:28–40 or Luke 21:25–36

The Lord Jesus Comes in Humility to Redeem Us

The season of Advent focuses on the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and this first Sunday establishes this theme for the rest of the season. The Son of God came long ago to be our Savior, “a righteous Branch” descended from David (Jer. 33:15). As He then came into Jerusalem, riding on a lowly donkey to sacrifice Himself for the sins of the world (Luke 19:28–40), so does He come to His Church today in the humility of Word and Sacrament to deliver the fruits of His Passion: the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. He absolves us and establishes our hearts “blameless in holiness before our God and Father” (1 Thess. 3:13). The same Lord Jesus, who came to Jerusalem then and who comes to us now in peace, will come again with power and great glory on the Last Day. Then there will be “distress of nations in perplexity,” with “people fainting with fear.” Yet, as we anticipate that great and terrible day, He bids us to rest securely in Him: “Raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near” (Luke 21:25, 26, 28).  (Taken from the lectionary summaries on the LCMS website)

Remembering in our Prayers Today:  Remembering in our Prayers Today: Ursula Farash who is recovering.  Anita Clancy, John Shad, Bert Gerken sister in law of pastor Dan Gerken who is in an Italian hospital waiting to be released, Art Jestice. Tim Marshall, friend of Juli Josi, who is awaiting results of cancer removal surgery.  Charles Jones, Connie Mackie, Joan Berwick friends of Karla Bohn. Earl Russell, brother of Jean Russell, he had open heart surgery and is home recovering.  Melissa Shaw, who has a mild concussion.

Making a Prayer Request: Home-bound members, those hospitalized, members of the armed forces, and others are frequently remembered in both personal and public prayers. We weep with those who weep; we rejoice with those who rejoice. Are there specific prayer requests to note in this Newsletter, the Sunday Bulletin, or for Sunday's public prayers during the Liturgy? For this Newsletter and the Sunday Bulletin the effort is made to update these weekly. Please contact the church office by phone (253-584-2565) or email: office@poplakewood.org.

Prayer requests will be kept on the list for two weeks unless otherwise requested.  Please help us keep the prayer requests up-to-date with any additions or updates, thank you.
