November Recap

Stomp Out Stigma Event – The Stomp Out Stigma (SOS) committee sent thank you notes to sponsors, donors, and community partners. They also put together a “Thank You” ad listing all our sponsors, donors, and community partners that appeared in the Sunday, October 14 Bend Bulletin. The event raised close to $15,000 for NAMI Central Oregon. Thank you again for your attendance and support!

Planning has begun for our 2019 Stomp Out Stigmatentative date of June 1st.
The SOS Committee hopes to find a venue where the AirLink helicopter has permission to land, as part of the festivities. Volunteers are needed to help recruit sponsors in the month of December. Please contact NAMI Central Oregon regarding these volunteer opportunities.

NAMI Oregon Conference in late October was well attended by several Central Oregon NAMI members! The keynote speaker was Andrew Grover, Executive Director of Youth Villages Oregon. Youth Villages operates in the Portland and Central Oregon areas serving youth with mental health issues. Topics included the annual meeting and membership report, "Managing a Child’s Mental Health Crisis", "A Photographic Exploration into Bi-Polar and Depression", information regarding the ABLE Savings Plan, "Helping Faith Communities Help When it Comes To Mental Health", & an advocacy and public policy update.

First NAMIOR Leadership Summit was held this fall! Four NAMI-CO Board Members attended and networked with members from all Oregon chapters, where they shared procedures and information. Eileen White was asked to share at the Summit about the process used to reorganize NAMI-CO into committees and how we identified and assigned roles to help NAMI-CO’s focus. Jennifer MacLean, Executive Director of NAMI Lane County, is coming to Central Oregon in December to meet with our operational board and advise. The Summit provided goal setting templates which our operational board will be
utilizing at their January afternoon retreat.

Deschutes County Behavioral Health Advisory Board: Roger Olson, Eileen White, Karyn Kotkins and Tina Smith all serve on this board. The purpose of the BHAB is to advise our county Behavioral Health program on community needs and priorities for services, as well as to help in planning, reviewing, and evaluating services for services related to addiction, mental health,
and developmental disabilities.
  • Janice Garceau was introduced as the new Deputy Director of Deschutes County Behavioral Health. Janice shared about the interview process, calling it a chance for reflection, on what it means to run a behavioral health clinic, and what impacts clients. In turn, she asked the panel what would make them feel in one year that they picked the right person, which says a lot about Janice and ultimately made her stand out. She considers any input her marching orders.
  • We were informed about the Stepping Up Initiative, which aims to keep mentally ill folks out of jail. We identified the need to inform our new county commissioners about addiction, MH, & DD, as they oversee the funding distributions for these services.
Update on NAMI-OR’s Executive Director Chris Bouneff’s visit to Central Oregon: Chris visited to hear about our programs and was particularly impressed with our Compassion Committee and Stomp Out Stigma event. He shared plans for the State Conference and Leadership Summit.
